GOLDEN BULLS MEN’S BASKETBALL CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH A 74-65 ROAD LOSS SHAW

JCSU winless in last three

Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team concluded the 2012-13 regular season with a 74-65 loss to divisional foe Shaw University on Saturday afternoon at Southeast Raleigh High. JCSU ends the season with an overall record of 16-10, 9-7 in the CIAA, and 5-5 in the division; while the Bears improve to 16-10 overall, 10-6 conference, and 4-9 in the Southern.

The first half belonged to the Golden Bulls. JCSU scored the first two field goals, but the Bears would soon bounce back. A three-pointer from All-CIAA senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) moved JCSU ahead 8-7 at the 15:34 mark. Shaw trailed for the remainder of the first half.

JCSU led by as much as 12 (25-13) halfway through the opening. At the break, the Golden Bulls held a 42-33 advantage. Shaw lost the rebounding battle 16-8. Parks had 16 points and two assists, while junior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) produced 11 points and two boards in the first half. The Golden Bulls shot 58% (14-24) from the field, 83% (10-12) from the foul line, and 67% (4-6) from the three point line.

The second half was a shift in momentum that favored the Bears. Parks made two free throws at the 16:34 mark to give the Golden Bulls a 48-37 lead. From that point, Shaw went on a 12-0 scoring run to grasp a 49-48 advantage with 11:39 on the clock. An additional free throw by Parks, followed by two scores in the post by All-CIAA sophomore forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) slowed the Bears' charge.

But JCSU allowed a 9-2 run after the eight and half minute mark. Shaw was up only 63-61 once Emilio Parks made back to back layups with 3:18 left to play. Unfortunately, the Bears produced seven unanswered points over the next two minutes. The Golden Bulls missed their opportunity for third place in the division with the loss.

Shaw won the second half rebounding battle 18-10. JCSU was outscored 41-23 in the final period.

Trevin Parks had a game-high 21 points, despite being held to five points in the last half. Emilio Parks contributed with 16 points and three rebounds. Wilkerson concluded the game with 15 points, six boards, and two steals.
Latrail McCoy led the Bears with a team-high 18 points, along with six assists. Andre Paulk had 15 points and five boards, while Taurus Dortch produced 14 points and eight assists.

JCSU will enter the tournament as third in the Southern Division. The Golden Bulls will await the official announcement of the tournament bracket and seeding. The 2013 CIAA Basketball Tournament play for JCSU will begin on Wednesday, February 27th.
