Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team falls 65-63 to Elizabeth City State in the quarterfinals of the 2013 CIAA Tournament held Thursday afternoon at the Time Warner Cable Arena. JCSU concludes the season with a 16-11 overall record. ECSU will face the winner of the Livingstone/Saint Augustine's matchup at 7:00 p.m.
This contest remained close throughout the entirety. There were 11 lead changes and 12 times the score was tied. JCSU held a small 24-23 advantage at the end of the first half. The Vikings shot 33% (8-24) from the floor in the opening, while the Golden Bulls connected on 38.5% (10-26) of their shot attempts. Both teams were perfect from the free throw line, but ECSU made three of their six three point attempts to stay in contention.
All-CIAA sophomore forward
Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) carried JCSU with 13 first half points. Parks maintained his typical high shooting percentage with five made baskets off seven attempts (71%). Junior guard
Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) added five points and six rebounds. All-CIAA senior guard
Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) struggled early with two points off one of six shooting.
Dominique Byrd and Miykael Faulcon paced the Vikings with six points each.
The second half started off on a much more intensified tempo. Glenn Patterson drilled a three to give ECSU a 26-24 lead. Williams caught a rhythm and nailed back to back three-pointers for a 30-26 JCSU advantage. Both teams exchanged quick bursts of scoring with their offensive possessions. The Vikings managed to gain a 50-43 lead halfway through the period.
JCSU climbed out of the deficit with consecutive three-pointers from Williams and
Trevin Parks. The game reached its 12th tie off a free throw from
Emilio Parks with 58 seconds remaining. On the next ECSU possession, Blake Price made a reverse layup to give the Vikings a 65-63 lead with 29 seconds left play.
The Golden Bulls failed to convert on their next possession and were forced to foul Glenn Patterson. However, Patterson missed both of his free throw attempts. After a miscommunication on an inbound play, JCSU was left with 1.7 seconds to get a shot off. CIAA All-Rookie guard
Joshua Linson (San Antonio, TX) launched a three that missed the mark as time expired.
Emilio Parks ended the evening with a game-high 21 points, along with seven rebounds.
Trevin Parks dropped 18 points in the second half to finish with 20 points and three assists. Williams went five of eight from the field and four of six from beyond the arc for 14 points and eight boards.
Four Vikings produced double digit point totals led by Faulcon with 17 points. Patterson pitched in 11 points and four assists. Price and Shaquil Barber both had 10 points.
JCSU shot 31% (4-13) from the foul line in the second half, after going three for three in the first half.
“You hope that your players are prepared and maybe that was an area that we were not prepared in,” said JCSU head coach
Stephen Joyner, Sr. in reference to the second half foul shooting. “When you get to the tournament; there are no second-chance opportunities. We've shot free throws good all season long; but not today. If there was a weak point, it was how we handled things emotionally and didn't do what we were supposed to do.”
The Golden Bulls ended the year third in the Southern Division, they added four more victories to their overall record from the previous season, and two players earned all-conference honors as well as their first all-rookie selection since 2008.
