Charlotte, NC
– Team award winners and 100 student-athletes were acknowledged for academics across all 15 varsity sports and support groups (cheerleading and dance team) as honorees at the 2013 Johnson C. Smith University Athletics Awards Ceremony catered by FDY on Monday evening inside Grimes Lounge.

Senior guard Trevin Parks (Men's Basketball) and junior sprinter Danielle Williams (Women's Track and Field) were named the 2013 Pettis Norman Award recipients. The Pettis Norman Award is the highest honor awarded from JCSU Athletics to recognize the outstanding performance in the field of competition of a male and female student-athlete throughout the academic year.

Parks, a native of Hickory, NC, earned selection to the All-CIAA Team, the All-Atlantic Region First Team, and the Daktronics All-American Team all this season. He ranked third in the NCAA Division II and led the CIAA for total points and points per game with 674 points and 25 ppg. He scored 30 or more points in eight games this season, including a new career-high of 41 points.

This was the third time Parks received the Pettis Norman Award during his career at JCSU.

Williams, hailing from St. Andrew, Jamaica, had a superb year for both indoor and outdoor track and field. She was named the women's most valuable athlete at the 2013 CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Williams won the 60m dash, 60m hurdles and 200m dash at the indoor conference championship.

Williams won the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor national title for the 60m hurdles. She also placed second in the 200m dash with a JCSU record setting time of 23.43 at the national indoor championships. Williams earned All-American status in three events (60m H, 200m, and 60m).

At the 2013 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Williams helped the team win their second team championship by individually winning the 100 dash (11.43) and 200 dash (23.56). Williams is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation for the 100m and remains unbeaten in the event this season.

“One of our goals within athletics is to help each of our student-athletes maximize their potential as well as helping them develop into the best student, the best athlete and the best person they can be,” said Director of Athletics Stephen Joyner, Sr. “We want our student-athletes to have a wonderful experience they will treasure throughout life. To the seniors, we are grateful you chose JCSU. And to our student-athlete that achieved at a high level academically, we're tremendously proud of you and look to continue our academic success.”

Stan Lewter of ESPN TV and host of the Inside the Game show served as the master of ceremonies. The JCSU 100 Club inducted university president Dr. Ronald Carter as an honorary member.

The JCSU women's outdoor track and field team was the only team this year to win a championship of any sort as the 2013 CIAA Outdoor Champions.

Academically, 100 student-athletes were named scholar-athletes in acknowledgement of National Student-Athlete Day. To qualify, a student-athlete must earn a term grade-point average of at least a 3.0 during the spring and fall 2012 terms.

The evening was brought to a conclusion with some inspirational closing remarks by Dr. Carter, following by the singing of the school Loyalty Song.
