JCSU wins six of last seven matches

Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team defeated Shaw University in three sets (25-14, 25-6, 25-18) on Monday evening at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. JCSU improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA, while the Lady Bears drop to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

JCSU took advantage of the injury riddled Lady Bears. Shaw could only participate with six players due to the "injury bug". The Golden Bulls took the first set 25-14 followed by a 25-6 commanding victory in the second set. Shaw led early in the third set, but ran out of steam and loss the match with a 25-18 third set decision.

Junior outside hitter Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, NC) had a team-high nine kills and six digs along with four service aces. Junior middle hitter Jane Tukia (Tempe, AZ) and sophomore Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) chipped in eight kills and seven kills, respectively. Senior setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) connected with her teammates for a match-high 17 assists.

The Golden Bulls have won their last two matches and earned victories in six of their last seven contests. JCSU has already surpassed their 2012 win total of five.

Johnson C. Smith will now prepare to host the CIAA Volleyball Roundup. The Golden Bulls will face Virginia State University and Chowan University on day one, followed by a match with Elizabeth City State University on day two. All matches will be held at Phillip O. Berry High School on September 28-29. Match play is scheduled to begin at 12 noon on September 28th and 11 a.m. on September 29th.
