JCSU move to .500 overall and in conference

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's volleyball team had a winless weekend with matches against Elizabeth City State University (3-1), Chowan University (3-0), and Virginia State University (3-0) during the CIAA North-South Roundup hosted by JCSU at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. JCSU falls to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the CIAA.

On day one, the Golden Bulls faced Elizabeth City State and Chowan. JCSU dropped the first two sets (25-21, 25-16) to the Lady Vikings. Junior hitters Jane Tukia (Tempe, AZ) and Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, NC) led the attack for a 25-23 victory in the third set. ECSU closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth.

Jones had nine kills and 10 digs against ECSU. Tukia produced eight kills, eight digs, and three block assists in the match versus the Lady Vikings.

The Hawks managed to pull off a three-set sweep (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) over JCSU. Chowan was the only team to win all three of their matches; defeating JCSU, Livingstone College, and Winston-Salem State University.

On the second and final day, the Golden Bulls suffered a three-set loss to Virginia State. Sophomore middle blocker Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, SC) stood out with six kills and a solo block. The Lady Trojans won 25-11 set one, 25-14 set two, and then held on for a 26-24 set three win.

Doctor had a team-high 17 kills during the roundup. Tukia chipped 15 kills, 13 digs, and four block assists during the three-match stretch. Jones added 13 kills, 14 digs, and two service aces. Senior setter Kayla Bazemore (Fayetteville, NC) had 52 assists, five service aces, and six digs over the weekend.

JCSU will begin divisional play in their next match against Livingstone College on Thursday, October 3rd. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury, NC.
