Ettrick, VA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team dropped their first CIAA contest of the season to Virginia State 67-47 on Monday, January 13th at Daniel Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while the Lady Trojans improve to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA.
JCSU trailed in this contest from start to finish. Virginia State jumped out to an 8-0 lead the first five minutes of the game. Senior guard
Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) put the first points on the board for the Golden Bulls with a jumper at the 14:50 mark. However, the Lady Trojans stayed on the attack and sparked a 7-2 run after the score from Downer.
The Golden Bulls fought back and only faced a 19-17 deficit after two free throws from sophomore center
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, NC) with 5:33 remaining in the first half. VSU put their foot on the pedal again and accelerated with a 10-4 run to close out the period. JCSU trailed 29-21 at the half.

Salesse Stovall (Roanoke, VA), and Downer all had four points at the break. JCSU shot 32% (8-25) from the field, 83% (5-6) from the free throw line, and 0-for-6 from behind the three point line.

Chelsea Faulhaber (Spartanburg, SC) scored five of the first six points for JCSU to start the second half. Faulhaber completed an old-fashion three point play to bring the Golden Bulls within a possession (29-27) with 16:43 remaining.
The Lady Trojans continued to push the tempo in their favor en route to a double digit advantage. JCSU trailed by at least 11 points the final seven minutes of play.

This is the first loss for JCSU since November 30, 2013. The Golden Bulls still have won 10 of their last 12 games.
VSU had four players record double figures led by Tiffanie Adair with 17 points and six rebounds. Lamesha Deal produced 16 points, eight boards, seven assists, and three steals for the Lady Trojans.
JCSU will attempt to bounce back as they begin divisional play on Saturday, January 18th against Fayetteville State University. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Capel Arena on the campus on FSU in Fayetteville, NC.
