JCSU women's basketball has their lowest scoring output of the season in the 56-31 road loss to Fayetteville State
Box Score Fayetteville, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team suffered a 56-31 loss to Fayetteville State University on Saturday, January 18th in Felton J. Capel Arena. JCSU moves to 10-6 overall, 5-2 in the CIAA, and begin division play at 0-1. The Lady Broncos improve to 12-4 overall, 5-2 in conference, and 1-0 in the Southern Division.
JCSU was pretty much dominated in this contest from half to half. Senior guard
Marquesha Sparks (San Fernando, CA) scored on a jumper for the first points of the game. Amber Calvin hit a three pointer at the 17:39 to claim a 3-2 lead for FSU. The Lady Broncos did not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the contest.
By the midway point of the first half (10:07), the Golden Bulls faced a 20-5 deficit. At the break, Fayetteville State held a 33-11 advantage. JCSU only connected on 5-of-24 attempts (20.8%) from the field and 1-of-6 (16.7%) at the foul line. Meanwhile, FSU went 44.8% (13-29) from the floor and made all six of their free throw attempts.
In the second half, JCSU failed to cut their deficit below 19 points at any point. Fayetteville State only outscored the Golden Bulls 23-20 in the second half; but the Lady Broncos' first half lead was too much to overcome.
Senior guard
Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) had a team-high seven points, along with three rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, NC) and Sparks both had six points.
De'Aira Smith led Fayetteville State with 13 points. Bria Robinson chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Golden Bulls return to the court on Wednesday, January 22nd against Saint Augustine's University in Brayboy Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
