Foul trouble plagues JCSU

Box Score Winston-Salem, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team lost to Winston-Salem State University 81-69 in a divisional matchup on Saturday, January 30th at the C.E. Gaines Center. JCSU moves to 13-7 overall, 5-5 in the CIAA, and 2-2 in the Southern Division; the Rams improve to 12-8, 7-3 in the conference, and 3-1 in the division.

The Golden Bulls had a good showing in the first half, but trailed for the last 15 minutes of the period. Sophomore Alandre Davis (Wilson, NC) had a big dunk with less than 20 seconds remaining. Davis cut the JCSU deficit to 30-27. Javan Wells responded with a three pointer just before the buzzer for a 33-27 WSSU advantage going into the locker room.

Junior forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) had eight points and five rebounds at the break. Senior forward Kameko Walls (Winston-Salem, NC) produced five points and four boards. JCSU shot 37.9% (11-29) from the field, compared to 35% (11-31) shooting for the Rams.

JCSU took control and grabbed a lead in the second half. A three pointer from junior guard LaMarquis Letchaw (Dallas, TX) had the Golden Bulls up 55-48 with 11:34 left on the clock. WSSU totally reversed the tides with a 15-2 scoring run over the next five minutes of play. Winston-Salem State maintained a lead until of the conclusion.

Parks ended the game with a team-high double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) pitched in nine points, followed by Davis and sophomore guard Raston Brown (Hephzibah, GA) with eight points each.

WyKevin Bazemore and Preston Ross both had a double-double for WSSU. Bazemore had 18 points and 14 boards, while Ross contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Bulls return to action on Saturday, February 1st against Shaw University. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
