Murfreesboro, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team topped Chowan University 75-59 in a CIAA contest on Thursday, January 9th at the Helms Center. JCSU improves to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while the Hawks fall to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the CIAA.
The Golden Bulls started off fast against Chowan in the first half. Six minutes into the contest, JCSU held an 11-2 advantage. The Hawks eventually battled back and drew within four (16-12) with 10:12 on the clock. The Hawks managed to take their first lead (22-20) with a three pointer from RyJae Anderson at the 4:28 mark.
Senior guard
Karnina Bunch (Vicksburg, MS) answered back with a three-pointer to reclaim the lead. In fact, Bunch scored the last five points of the half. She made another three-pointer and a pull-up jumper as time expired in the first half. JCSU held a 32-26 advantage at the break.
Bunch has a team-high nine points, followed by senior guard
Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA) with five points. JCSU shot 54% (13-24) from the field, while the Hawks connected on 33% (9-27) of their shot attempts. The Golden Bulls overwhelmed Chowan by outscoring them 14-5 in the points off turnovers category.
Chowan faced a deficit for the entire second half. JCSU never relinquished their lead and extended their advantage to as much as 17 (67-50) with less than four minutes to play. The Golden Bulls closed out the game and earned their ninth win in their last 10 games.
