Golden Bulls improve to 4-6 in CIAA play.

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 13, 2014)—Johnson C. Smith had three players post double-digit kills as they took a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 27-25) CIAA volleyball win over St. Augustine's in Brayboy Gym on Monday evening.

In the first set, the Golden Bulls were paced by freshman Kathleen Janda (Parker Heights, Tex.) and sophomore Symone Lawson (Durham, N.C.) with four kills each.  The Golden Bulls fell behind 15-20 which led to a timeout.  Following the timeout, JCSU responded with an 10-3 run to end the first set.

In the second set neither team was able to build more than a two-point lead.  St. Augustine's, paced by Danyelle Noland and Olivia Porter, propelled the Hawks to the 25-23 win to knot the match at 1-1.

JCSU rebounded in the third set.  Leading 11-8, the Golden Bulls blew open the set by going on a 14-6 run sparked by a red-hot .469 hitting percentage.  The Bulls registered 16 kills in the set, four by  senior outside hitter Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.).

Down 14-10 in the fourth set, JCSU again came from behind, ultimately earning the 27-25 win to make the final 3-1.

JCSU was led by Jane Tukia (Tempe, Ariz.) and Gracyn Doctor, as each pounded out 15 kills in the win.  Saleese Stovall (Roanoke, Va.) and Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, N.C.) also contributed with nine kills each.  Kathleen Janda led the service attack with six aces, while Khadijah Segura (Minnesota, Mich.) dealt out 43 assists.

With the win, the Golden Bulls improve to 8-9 overall, 4-6 in CIAA play while St. Augustine's falls to 6-13 overall, 5-7 in league play.

The Golden Bulls return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 14 with a non-conference match at USC-Aiken.  First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
