JCSU Volleyball Cruises Past Voorhees, 3-0

Golden Bulls have 22 aces in the win.

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 17, 2014)—The Johnson C. Smith volleyball team had no trouble with visiting Voorhees College, taking a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-12) win on Friday evening in Brayboy Gymnasium.

In the opening set, Voorhees jumped out to an early 9-5 advantage by a kill by the Tiger's Marcia Bolden .  The Golden Bulls forced a timeout, battling back to tie the set at 11-11.  Following the timeout, the Golden Bulls went on a 14-6 run led by Jane Tukia (Tempe, Ariz.) to close out the set. 

The second set saw the Bulls quickly jump out to a 9-3 lead forcing a Voorhees timeout  During that run, the Golden Bulls turned in five aces, three by Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.) and a pair from Kathleen Janda (Parker Heights, Tex.)..

The Bulls momentum continued, as a 10-3 run put JCSU up 19-6.  Firmly in control of the set, JCSU closed it out, taking a 25-11 win.  During the set, the Bulls notched nine aces, five by Segura. 

JCSU closed out the match taking a convincing 25-12 win in set three.

Collectively, the Golden Bulls notched 22 aces on the match, with Segura and Janda each delivering six.  Tukia finished the match with 10 kills, with Sugura dishing out 22 assists.  Defensively, Symone Lawson (Mebane, N.C.) had six digs, while Tukia recorded two solo blocks.

With the win, JCSU improves to 9-10 overall while Voorhees drops to 2-15 on the season.   The Golden Bulls return to CIAA play on Oct. 20 with a 6:00 p.m. road match at Shaw.
