Golden Bulls Drop CIAA Contest at Fayetteville State, 34-14

Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University football team defeated Johnson C. Smith University 34-14 in a CIAA Southern Divisional matchup on October 18th at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. FSU wins their third consecutive game and improves to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. JCSU moves to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the CIAA.


 The Broncos jumped out to a big first half lead and never looked back. Senior quarterback Jemeryn Jenkins (San Bernardino, CA) started under center and orchestrated the first three scoring drives. In the first quarter, Jenkins connected with senior receiver Ricardo White (Monroe, NC) for an 11-yard TD reception. The initial quarter ended with the Broncos ahead 7-0.

Jenkins scrambled into the end zone from a yard out for the second FSU score. Freshman linebacker Seth Johnson (Charlotte, NC) setup the touchdown after recovering a fumble and returning it 34 yards to the JCSU one yard line.

Fayetteville State produced another touchdown towards the end of the second quarter. Jenkins led FSU 25 yards in six plays. Jenkins linked up with junior receiver Chris Hubert (Apex, NC) for a three yard TD. Johnson C. Smith trailed 20-0 at the half.

JCSU outscored the Broncos 14-0 in the third quarter to slightly rebound. Andrew Alexander threw a touchdown pass to Michael Rhymes and then Fred Scott to draw closer. Fayetteville State held onto a 20-14 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore running back Corbin Rascoe (Windsor, NC) slammed on a potential comeback with two TD runs in the fourth. First, he capped a 75-yard drive with a 32-yard touchdown rush. The big play happened at the beginning of the final quarter. Lastly, Rascoe finished off an eight play drive with a one yard scoring run.

The Broncos' defense shut out JCSU in three quarters of the contest. FSU gained 361 yards of total offense, including 188 yards on the ground. Rascoe and junior running back Andre Montgomery (Goldsboro, NC) each rushed for 74 yards off less than 10 carries. Rascoe also ran for two scores.

Jenkins completed 15-of-26 passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Hubert caught seven passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Junior linebacker Thomas Perry (Windsor, NC) recorded a team-high nine tackles (7 solo), including two tackles for a loss. Senior safety Michael Johnson (Raleigh, NC) tallied eight tackles, a tackle for a loss, and an interception.

Sophomore defensive back Travis Scales (Southern Pines, NC) and junior defensive back Jalen Sowell (Monroe, NC) both had an interception in the contest.

JCSU hits the road for another CIAA matchup on Oct. 25 at Shaw.  Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Durham County Stadium.
