Golden Bulls Look to Ruin Homecoming for Shaw
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 24, 2014)—The Johnson C. Smith football team hits the road for the second consecutive week this Saturday, Oct. 25
th with a date with the Shaw Bears.
The Bears own a 2-5 overall record, including a 1-3 mark in CIAA play, and are coming off their second straight one-point defeat in as many weeks. Last week, the Bears fell at Livingstone 27-26, as the Blue Bears escaped with a homecoming win when Drew Powell raced 30 yards for the go-ahead score with 5:51 remaining. Shaw saw its chances for a come-from-behind win dashed when quarterback Trey Folston was intercepted inside Livingstone territory with 3:24 remaining. Folston would throw for 84 yards on a 12-28 performance on the afternoon.
Marqui Grizzle led the Bears attack, gaining 222 yards on the ground including two scores, one for 65 yards and the latter from four-yards out.
Defensively, Shaw was led by Der Washington, as he registered seven tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception on the day.
The Golden Bulls are coming off their fifth-straight defeat and currently stand at 1-6 overall, 0-4 in league play. JCSU trailed 20-14 late in the third quarter last week after
Fred Scott found the end zone after hauling in a four-yard strike from quarterback
Andrew Alexander. Offensively,
Chris Patterson led the Golden Bulls with 53 yards rushing. Michael Rhymes caught two passes for 29 yards, providing an 18 yard touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Austin Jacques continues his stellar play on defense, totaling 11 tackles, three for a loss and forcing a fumble.
Kerry Hartley provided two interceptions on the day for the Golden Bulls.
