Box Score (Durham, NC) - The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls held a 27-0 halftime lead, but Shaw scored 28 unanswered second-half points to pull out the Homecoming win in front of 6,587 at Durham County Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bulls scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, both on Avius Capers' receptions from Andrew Alexander. ,The first scoring strike covered seven yards while the second went for four yards. ,Two more Golden Bull touchdown receptions in the second quarter, a two-yard pass to Terrell Hutchinson and a three-yard pass to Chris Patterson propelled the JCSU lead to 27-0 at the intermission
With 4:56 left in the third quarter the Bears,Donald Jones,turned up the action when he blocked a JCSU punt and ,Shaw's,Paul Maple,scooped and scored for a 21-yard touchdown recovery.
,A few plays later the Bears came back with another touchdown from,Marquise Grizzle. ,Grizzle ran,in for 12-yards 38 seconds left on the third quarter clock.
In the fourth quarter, Shaw went on a four-play, 23-yard drive capped by Grizzle's one-yard scoring run to pull the Bears to within seven at 27-21.
JCSU's Leander Barney would fumble and Shaw's,Derrick Washington,recovered the ball at JCSU 25-yard line.,Kowaski Kitchens,then hauled in a,nine-yard pass from Folston for the touchdown, giving Shaw a 28-27 lead.
JCSU answered with 1:55 remaining when Terrell Hutchinson pulling in his second touchdown of the day, this time from 17 yards out to reclaim the the lead at 34-28.
The Bears began a seven-play drive at their own 20 yard line and quickly moved up the field after two passes from Folston to Jones for 16 and 25 yards respectively, Grizzle took the handoff and raced in from 17 yards out for the touchdown. Ian Burris' extra point provided the 35-34 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff Shaw's Tavarji Fuller forced a Fred Scott fumble, which was recovered by Burris at the JCSU 38-yard line. ,From there, the Bears were able to run out the clock to take the 35-34 win.
JCSU quarterback Andrew Alexander threw for 365 yards on a 35-63 performance, including five touchdowns. ,On the receiving end, Fred Scott caught four passes for 87 yards.Chris Patterson had eight receptions for 64 yards and one touchdown. ,Avius Capers caught seven passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns and Terrell Hutchinson added two receptions, both for touchdowns.
The loss drops JCSU to,,1-7 overall, 0-5 in CIAA play. The Golden Bulls return to the Irwin Belk Complex on Saturday, Nov. 1 for homecoming vs. St. Augustine's. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
