JCSU Uses Late Surge To Down Rollins 64-59

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 22, 2014) – Johnson C. Smith used a late surge that included three-straight possessions that ended in three-pointers to upend Rollins College 64-59 in the Wendy's/Claude Saunders JCSU Tip-Off Classic at Brayboy Gym.

JCSU would bolt to a 16-8 lead following a pair of free throws from Robert Davis, III (West Friendship, Md.).  The eight point cushion would not last, as Rollins' would tie the game at 22 on an Alex Blessig three-pointer with 7:01 remaining in the half.

Rollins would go on a 7-3 run to end the half, when Blessig would force a JCSU turnover and his subsequent layup beat the buzzer to provide Rollins with the 29-25 halftime lead.

After the break, Rollins would extend the lead to 41-34 following a layup by Jeff Dirken.  The Golden Bulls would respond, closing the gap to 41-38 with 12:07 to play.  Diondre Pratt (Morven, N.C.) would can a free throw bringing the Golden Bulls closer at 41-39.

A deep three-pointer from Markell Lotharp (Marshville, N.C.) gave JCSU a brief lead at 42-41.   Rollins would regain the one-point lead following a layup.

A Joshua Linson (San Antonio, Tex.) three would regain the lead for JCSU at 54-53 at the 4:59 mark. 

Following a Lotharp block, Linson would hit a big transition three-pointer to put JCSU 40ahead 57-53, igniting the JCSU faithful and forcing a Rollins timeout.

Linson would hit another big three on the next possession, this time banking it in from the right wing to extend the Golden Bull lead to 60-55.  Linson would hit yet another three with 1:57 to go, this time from the left wing, giving JCSU a 63-57 lead.

Following a Davis, III free throw, Rollins would pull to within five at 64-59 with 13.9 left which would eventually be the final.

Collectively, both teams shot 41% from the field with JCSU going 24-59 and Rollins returning a 23-57 effort.

The Golden Bulls were led by Linson's 15 points, all of which came on three-pointers.  Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.) added 13.  Leading the way on the boards for JCSU was Alandre Davis (Florence, S.C.), as he corralled 10 rebounds on the afternoon.

Rollins was led by Scott Shuette's 14 points.  Chris Uhle added 11 while Alex Blessig and Sharif Almulla each had 10.

JCSU improves to 2-2 on the year while Rollins falls to 2-3.

Johnson C. Smith will return to action on Dec. 2 when they travel to Lincoln on Dec. 2 to open CIAA play.
