JCSU Women's Basketball Downs Seton Hill In Home Opener, 79-67
Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 29, 2014) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team scored 26 points off 24 Seton Hill turnovers and took a 79-67 win in their first home game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Brayboy Gym
Seton Hill came alive in the first half from long range, jumping ahead of JCSU at 8-4 when Alexandra Hay hit from outside. JCSU cut the lead to one at 8-7, but Mariah Wells delivered another three at the 13:47 mark to put Seton Hill up 13-9. The three-point onslaught continued when Hay once again connected on a three-pointer to up the lead to 16-13 with 11:33 left in the first half.
JCSU would respond as an
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) three-pointer gave JCSU only their second lead of the game at 18-17 at the 9:47 mark.
Seton Hill would then embark on an 11-5 run pushing their lead to 28-20 with 5:38 remaining in the first half. That run was capped by a Kelly Brennan fast-break jumper following a Golden Bulls turnover.
JCSU would battle back, eventually taking a four point lead at 34-30 with 2:07 left when
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) would hit a pair of free throws. Seton Hill would surge ahead again at 35-34 with 1:20 left, this time on a three from Lindsey Mifsud. JCSU would get two free throws from Jordan to provide the 36-35 Golden Bull lead at the break.
JCSU would run away in the second-half, turning the one-point advantage into a nine-point cushion when Jordan scored on a fast break layup following a steal by
Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.). Seton Hill would cut the lead to three at 49-46 on a jumper by Hay, but the Griffins could get no closer the rest of the way.
The lead ballooned to as many as 16 when
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) put in a shot in off a missed free throw to make the score 74-58 JCSU with 4:15 to go.
The Golden Bulls would shoot 51% for the game on a 26-51 effort, including a 5-8 mark from three-point range. JCSU was also strong from the foul line, shooting 22-26 (84.6%) from the stripe. Seton Hill would hit for 50% on 25-50 shooting, with a 7-19 (36.8%) mark from three point range.
JCSU was led by
Asha Jordan's 21 points.
Anika Jones would add 15, including a 2-4 mark from long range.
LaKendra Wilkerson had another double-double, putting in 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds on the afternoon.
Seton Hill was led by Chelsea Apke's 14 points. Teammates Meghan Mastroianni and Jenna Kaufman each had 13 points in the losing effort.
The Golden Bulls improve to 5-1 on the year while Seton Hill falls to 2-4.
Johnson C. Smith returns to play on Friday, Dec. 5 against Georgia Southwestern in the first game of a triple-header. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
