WSSU drops JCSU Volleyball, 3-0

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C.—(Nov. 3, 2014) The Johnson C. Smith volleyball team fell to Winston-Salem State, 3-0 (24-26, 17-25, 19-25 ) on Monday night at Brayboy Gym.

In set one, JCSU jumped out to an 8-5 lead capped by a kill by Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.)  The Golden Bulls forced a WSSU timeout after extending the lead to 14-10.  Following the timeout,  WSSU went on a 6-3 run to pull within one and 17-16.  The two teams would trade points, with WSSU able to put the set away, 26-24.

WSSU would continue their hot play in set two, jumping out to a 6-2 lead.  WSSU would not trail in the set, cruising to the 25-17 win

Set three proved to be another tight one, as JCSU held a 15-14 lead.  Winston-Salem St. would rebound behind freshman Sydney Holland's four kills, taking the third and deciding set 25-19.

JCSU was led by Jane Tukia (Tempe, Ariz.), as she tallied 10 kills on the evening.  Segura would hand out 16 assists for the Golden Bulls in the losing effort.

The loss drops JCSU to 11-12 overall, 8-7 in CIAA play while WSSU improves to 13-13 overall and 12-3 in league play.  The Golden Bulls play their regular-season finale on Friday night, Nov.  7 at 6:00 p.m. against Fayetteville State.
