Golden Bulls Win Sixth Straight Commemorative Classic Over Livingstone, 31-14

JCSU forces 3 Livingstone fumbles in the season finale

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 8, 2014) -- Johnson C. Smith University forced three Livingstone turnovers en route to an emotional 31-14 win in the Commemorative Classic on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex

Livingstone struck first on a 39 yard pass from Drew Powell to Kemuel Brown.  The pass capped a 16-play, 89-yard drive that took 6:33 off the clock with 2:52 left in the first quarter. 

Andrew Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) found Fred Scott (Stone Mountain, Ga.) on a 22 yard pass at the 11:22 mark of the second quarter.  Erik Amaya (Kannapolis, N.C.) added the PAT to knot the game at 7-7.

JCSU's defense would tighten when Damion Miles (Beaufort, S.C.) broke through and blocked the 33-yard field goal attempt by Livingstone's Leonardo Manzo.

Keahn Wallace (Homestead, Fla.) returned as the JCSU signal-caller in the second quarter engineered a 12-play, 78 yard drive.  Scott once again delivered the touchdown from 22 yards out to put the Golden Bulls up 14-7 with 17.9 seconds left in the second quarter.  JCSU surprised the Livingstone special teams by successfully executing an onside kick with 12.9 left.  The Golden Bulls couldn't capitalize on the ensuing play, taking the 14-7 lead into halftime.

The Blue Bears started the second-half where it left off by putting together an 11-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a Powell two-yard rush touchdown to tie the game at 14-14. 

JCSU responded late in the third quarter when Miles came through again for the Golden Bull defense when he forced and recovered a Livingstone fumble with 5:32 left at the Blue Bear 10 yard-line.  Four plays later, Amaya punched through a 22-yard field goal to put JCSU up for good at 17-14.

The Golden Bulls struck again in the fourth quarter when Scott found pay dirt for the third time on the day, this time from 18 yards out from Wallace, putting JCSU up 24-14.  The game was put out of reach with 3:29 left when Alexander scored from two-yards out to provide the final, 31-14.

Defensively, JCSU was paced by Austin Jacques (Springdale, Md.), as he registered 13 tackles, including one for loss.  Jerel Miller (Rock Hill, S.C.) also had 13 tackles.  Jovontay Williams (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had four tackles-for-loss, including two sacks on the day.  Damion Miles had eight tackles, forced and recovered a fumble, and recorded a blocked field goal for the Golden Bulls.

Offensively, LeAnder Barney (Erie, Pa.) rushed for 76 yards on 18 carries for JCSU while Avius Capers (Charlotte, N.C.) collected six receptions for 112 yards.  Scott finished with five catches for 73 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon.  Wallace threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns on a 16-for-31 effort while Alexander threw for 85 yards and a score in addition to his late-game rushing touchdown.

Livingstone was paced by Drew Powell, as he gained 126 yards rushing with a touchdown.  Powell also collected 195 yards passing, going 15-for-29 with one touchdown toss.

With the win, JCSU (3-7, 2-5 CIAA) ends the 2014 season and earns its sixth-consecutive win in the Commemorative Classic series over Livingstone (5-5, 2-5 CIAA).
