Six different Bulldogs had at least nine points Monday night as Wingate University moved to 7-1 on the season with a 75-69 victory over visiting Johnson C. Smith University in NCAA Division II basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Golden Bulls fall to 4-4 on the season.

Senior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 13 points to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore center Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) had 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Zeriq Lolar (Orland, Fla.) had 10 points for the bulldogs. Junior guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had nine points, seven assists and five rebounds, while sophomores Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.) contributed nine points and six rebounds apiece.

Raston Brown (Hephizibah, Ga.) had 15 points and five rebounds to lead the Johnson C. Smith attack. Diondre Pratt (Morven, N.C.) added 10 points and nine rebounds, while Josh Linson (San Antonio, Tex.) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Alandre Davis (Florence, S.C.) had eight points and eight boards for the Golden Bulls.

A Davis Bucket put the Golden Bulls on top 10-6 at the 14:29 mark. A three-point play from Daye, followed by a Xavier Griffin layup put the 'Dogs on top by one a minute later. A layup from freshman guard Bryan Rouse(Greensboro, N.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 22-19 lead at the 7:41 mark. A layup from Daye pushed the lead to four at the 5:29 mark. JC Smith closed the half on an 11-3 run, taking a 34-30 halftime lead on a Davis jumper in the final seconds.

A layup from Robert Davis, III (West Friendship, Md.) gave the Golden Bulls a 41-34 advantage 2:30 into the second half. Wingate scored the next six points, cutting the lead to one a Lolar triple and Daye layup. A three from Hilliard tied it at 45, while a dunk from Hilliard put Wingate on top by one with 12 minutes to go. A dunk from freshman Lee McCall (Indian Land, S.C.), followed by a Rouse layup made it 56-52 with 7:56 to go.

A Xavier Griffin jumper with 5:44 to go made it 60-55 with 5:44 remaining. A Davis jumper trimmed the lead to three, but a Keith Griffin dunk and Hilliard steal and dunk pushed the lead to seven at the 4:46 mark. Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.) answered with a jumper and a triple to cut the lead to two with under four minutes to go. A Markell Lotharp (Marshville, N.C.) jumper made it 65-64 at the 3:12 mark. Xavier Griffin answered with a layup, while a Keith Griffin layup with a minute left made it 70-64. Daye followed with a layup to give the 'Dogs an eight-point advantage with under 30 seconds left.

Wingate shot 48.4 percent from the field, including 54.5 percent shooting in the second half. The 'Dogs were six-for-18 from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). JCSU shot 41.7 percent from the field, hitting four-of-18 shots from three-point range (22.2 percent). The Golden Bulls held a 40-39 rebounding edge, while Wingate held a 48-36 advantage in points in the paint. Wingate converted 11 JCSU turnovers into 14 points, while holding an 18-4 edge in fast break points.
