Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Dec. 8, 2014) – The Johnson C. Smith women's team held visiting Pfeiffer to nine points in the first half but had to withstand a furious Falcon rally to take a 56-49 win at Brayboy Gym on Monday evening.
The Golden Bulls were able to hold the Falcons to a dismal 3-30 (10%) shooting performance in the first half to take a commanding 26-9 lead into the halftime break.
Pfeiffer came alive in the second half, particularly from the three-point line, as Carter Williams single-handedly brought the visitors back, hitting five three's in the second half. Carter finished with a team-high 15 points. Meg Pritchard secured a double-double for the Falcons, tallying 11 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Pfeiffer closed the gap to within four points with 22 seconds to play when Jordan Bishop hit a pair of free throws to bring the score to 53-49.
JCSU was able to fend off the Falcons at the line late, with
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) hitting a pair, and
Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) connecting on one attempt to provide the 56-49 final.
JCSU forced the Falcons into 29 turnovers, converting those miscues into 32 points.
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) led the way for JCSU with 21 points. Jones finished 7-16 on the night, including a 4-12 effort from long-range.
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) secured her third consecutive double-double by grabbing 18 rebounds along with 11 points.
The loss drops Pfeiffer to 2-5 on the season while JCSU improves to 7-1. The Golden Bulls will take nearly a week off for final exams before hosting cross-town foe Johnson & Wales on Dec. 16 at 11:00 a.m. in an Education Day game in the last home game of the 2014 calendar year.
