JCSU women's basketball falls 74-47 to Saint Augustine's in their last road game of the regular season
Box Score Raleigh, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team suffered a 74-47 divisional loss to Saint Augustine's University on Monday, February 17th at Emery Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 13-10 overall, 8-6 in the CIAA, and 3-5 in the Southern. Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons improve to 11-12 overall, 6-8 in conference, and 2-6 in the division.
JCSU struggled throughout the first half. Junior center
Chelsea Faulhaber (Spartanburg, SC) made a layup at the 9:28 mark. The basket cut into the Lady Falcons' advantage, but JCSU still trailed 22-15. The Golden Bulls went seven and a half minutes before scoring another point in the contest.
Junior guard
Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, FL) made two free throws with 1:58 remaining in the first half. After breaking the scoreless drought, Saint Augustine's held a 37-17 lead. JCSU went into the locker room at halftime down 40-19.
The Golden Bulls shot 30% (8-26) in the first half, compared to 35% (11-31) shooting from the Lady Falcons. Saint Augustine's held a 14-4 advantage in points off turnovers and 19-2 advantage in points off the bench.
Senior guard
Karnina Bunch (Vicksburg, MS) set the pace for JCSU with 11 points in the first. Sweet pitched in four points, three rebounds, and two assists.
The second half had a rough beginning as well. The Golden Bulls did not score until Bunch made a three pointer with 14:31 on the clock. Saint Augustine's maintained their lead for the entirety of the final period. JCSU trailed by as much as 30, but cut their deficit down to 15 with a little less than seven minutes to play.
The contest eventually came to a conclusion with the Golden Bulls on the unfavorable end of a 74-47 score. JCSU finished shooting 29% (17-57) for the game and losing the rebounding battle 47-38. The team also committed 35 turnovers, compared to 22 for Saint Augustine's.
Bunch ended the game with a game-high 17 points and seven turnovers. Sweet, senior guard
Deanna Downer (Elberton, GA), and sophomore guard
Sharon Uyinmwen (London, England) all had six points each.
Porscha Walton and Terri Jacobs both had a team-high of 13 points apiece. Regime McCombs added 11 points to the total.
JCSU returns to their home floor for their next contest against Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday, February 19th. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium. The Golden Bulls will host their annual Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Game. Fans planning to attend are encouraged to wear pink in support of the effort.
