Karnina Bunch had 14 points and six rebounds in a 52-46 home loss to Winston-Salem State
Box Score Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team loses to Winston-Salem State University 52-46 for a divisional split on Wednesday, February 19th at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 13-11 overall, 8-7 in conference, and 3-6 in the Southern; while the Lady Rams improve to 14-11 overall, 8-7 in the CIAA, and 4-5 in the division.
Both teams played to a draw after the first half of basketball. Senior guard
Marquesha Sparks (San Fernando, CA) made two free throws with one second on the clock. Those foul shots tied the game 22-22 to close the half.
Sophomore center
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, NC) had a team-high eight points off the bench. Jasmine Elum produced six points at the break for WSSU. The Golden Bulls were 37.5% (9-24) and Winston-Salem State made 8-of-31 (25.8%) from the field.
In the second half, the game reached a 12th tie (46-46) off a layup from Jovonah Graham with three minutes remaining. JCSU failed to score again in the final three minutes of competition. The Lady Rams rattled off six unanswered points, including two jumpers to seals the win.
Senior guard
Karnina Bunch (Vicksburg, MS) scored 10 points in the second half to finish with 14 points and six rebounds. Porter concluded the contest with 12 points and three boards.
Somalia McKenney had 12 points and four rebounds for the Lady Rams. Amanda Hairston contributed with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Golden Bulls shooting percentage dropped to 18.8% (6-32) from the floor in the final period. WSSU was out-rebounded 54-40, but outscored JCSU 32-18 in the paint.
JCSU women's basketball plays their last regular season game on Saturday, February 22nd against Shaw University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Brayboy Gymnasium. The Golden Bulls will celebrate seniors
