Golden Bulls drop to No. 5 in the Southern

Box Score Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dropped their regular season finale 75-68 to Shaw University on Saturday, February 22nd at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 15-11 overall, 7-8 in the CIAA, and 3-6 in the division.

The Golden Bulls faced a deficit for the majority of the first half. However, after a layup from All-CIAA junior forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) at the buzzer, Shaw only had a 32-31 lead at the break. JCSU shot 54.5% (12-22) from the field. Shaw connected on 14-of-29 (48%) and won the rebounding battle 19-10 in the opening.

JCSU grabbed their first lead since the 15:32 mark of the first half with a jumper by sophomore forward Christan Williams (Chesapeake, VA). Senior guard Richard Daniels, Jr. (Winston-Salem, NC) launched a three pointer on the next possession for a 58-54 advantage with 7:16 left to play.

Shaw produced nine unanswered points after the three-pointer from Daniels. The Golden Bulls trailed 63-58 with 3:45 remaining in the contest. The Bears never allowed their lead to fall below three for the remainder of the game. Despite another layup from Parks at the end of the half, JCSU suffered a 75-68 loss.

Parks finished with a team-high 24 points and two steals. Junior guard LaMarquis Letchaw (Dallas, TX) had 12 points and three assists. Senior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, and a block. Daniels went 2-for-2 from the three point line for six points. Senior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) had five assists and two points.

The Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls will enter the 2014 CIAA Tournament as the No. 5 seed from the Southern Division. JCSU will face Virginia Union University (#6 Seed, CIAA North) on Tuesday, February 25th at 7:20 p.m. at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, NC.
