New school records set

University Park, PA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's indoor track and field team had some great performances at the prestigious Penn State National on January 31-February 1 at the Horace Ashenfelter III Track. Three events were won between senior Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) and junior Samantha Elliott (Kingston, Jamaica).

In 60m hurdles event, Williams won the race with a season best 8.14 time. Elliott placed sixth in the same event with a personal best time of 8.26. Sophomore Shamaz Quince (West Palm Beach, FL) had a personal best time of 8.90 in the preliminary round. The performances by Williams and Elliott have them ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the TFRRS performance list; both have automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Williams returned to compete in the 200m event. She won with a season best time of 23.53. Williams ranks first in the 200m on the TFRRS year to date performance list. The 4x400m team of Elliott, Williams, freshman Crystal Campbell (St. Catherine, Jamaica), and freshman Domenique Julius-Williams (Ontario, Canada) earned a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a season-best time of 3:47.84.

Elliott won the 400m event with a personal best time of 55.79. She ranked No. 6 on the TFRRS performance list. Elliott established a new JCSU record for the 400m; breaking the record she set two weeks ago at the UAB Invitational.

Sophomore Trudy-Ann Richards (St. Thomas, Jamaica) ran a personal best 7.65 in the 60m. Richards also had a personal best time of 25.14 in the 200m. In the 500m, sophomore Tovea Jenkins (St. James, Jamaica) clocked in at 1:18.46. She missed the JCSU record (1:18.39) by less than 1/10th of a second.

In the 800m, Julius-Williams finished with a time of 2:15.19; which smashes the previous record of 2:20.59 that Julius-Williams set on January 19, 2014. The time is a NCAA provisional qualifier ranking her No. 23 on the TFRRS performance list.

Quince also competed in the long jump. She placed seventh with a leap of 5.61m and achieved a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The performance ranks 19th on the TFRRS list.

The Golden Bulls will travel to Winston-Salem, NC for the 2014 CIAA Indoor Championships. Competition will be held February 16-17 at the JDL Indoor Track Complex.
