Golden Bulls only amassed three hits for the day

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team opened the 2014 season with two five inning, 8-0 losses to Brevard College on Friday, February 7th at Biddleville Park. After the non-conference doubleheader, JCSU is 0-2 in the standings and Brevard is 2-0 overall.

Freshman shortstop Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, CA) had the first hit of the season with a double to left field in the fourth inning. The Golden Bulls' only hit of the inning did not result in a run scored. Brevard scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning for an 8-0 lead. Freshman third baseman Morgan Hasty (Salem, IN) started off the bottom of the fifth with a single.

The Tornados' pitcher Jamie Hrobak got the next three batters out, including two strikeouts. Brevard earned an 8-0 victory after the conclusion of the fifth inning due to the NCAA eight-run rule.

Junior pitcher Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) took the loss on the mound. Peralta allowed 10 hits and seven earned runs with one strikeout. Hrobak had eight strikeouts in her victory for the Tornados.

The hitting struggles continued for JCSU in the second game of the doubleheader. Freshman Breanna Archibald (Wendell, NC) had the only hit of the game for the Golden Bulls. Archibald singled to center field in the third inning, but the hit did not lead to a run.

JCSU suffered a second 8-0 shutout which ended in five innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule. Freshman pitcher Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) lost in her debut with eight earned runs and three strikeouts. Hrobak had eight Ks in her second game pitching.

The Golden Bulls return to their home diamond for their next contest against Anderson University. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Biddleville Park.
