JCSU suffers a season sweep to the Broncos

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team dropped a second divisional game to Fayetteville State University, this time 71-66 on Saturday, February 8th at Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU moves to 13-9 overall, 5-7 in the CIAA, and 2-4 in the division; while the Broncos improve to 17-6 overall, 9-3 in conference, and 5-1 in the Southern.

The Golden Bulls held a lead for the majority of the first half. Junior guard LaMarquis Letchaw (Dallas, TX) made a layup with 2:22 on the clock for a 24-22 advantage. Marquette Hill tied the game for the fifth time on the next possession with a layup. Sophomore center Alandre Davis (Wilson, NC) recaptured a lead with a score in the post.

Joshua Dawson made a three pointer approaching the minute mark for a 27-26 FSU lead. Senior forward Robert Williams (Atlanta, GA) connected on two free throws, but JCSU still trailed 29-28 at the half.

The second half continued to push the pace and remain close. Senior forward Antwan Wilkerson (Greensboro, NC) made his second free throw to tie the game 59-59 with 4:43 to play. Dawson hit a jumper on the next series for FSU. The Golden Bulls faced a deficit until the conclusion of the contest.

Wilkerson finished with a game-high double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Williams produced 13 points and a steal. Junior forward Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, OH) had eight points, four steals, and three blocks. Davis chipped in eight points and two blocks.

Free throws continue to hinder the Golden Bulls down the stretch. JCSU shot 44% (8-18) from the foul line and lost the rebounding battle 50-39.

Tyrrel Tate had a team-high 16 points and six rebounds for the Broncos. Torian Showers produced a double-double of 13 points and 10 boards.

JCSU looks to rebound in their next contest against Saint Augustine's University on Wednesday, February 12th. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
