Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team suffered two losses (15-5, 14-0) in a non-conference doubleheader versus the University of Virginia's College at Wise (UVA-Wise) on Thursday, March 13th at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 3-9 overall, while the Cavaliers improve to 11-3 in the standings.
The Golden Bulls started off hot in the first game, but lost steam as the afternoon continued. Both teams went scoreless in the first inning. However, sophomore second baseman
Imani Scott (Atlanta, GA) and freshman outfielder
Breanna Archibald (Wendell, NC) both hit singles in the initial inning. JCSU produced four runs and three hits in the second inning.
Archibald smacked a 2-RBI single to right centerfield, which scored senior
Britney Warren (Atlanta, GA) and freshman
Morgan Hasty (Salem, IN). Freshman shortstop
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, CA) also had a 2-RBI hit to bring home Archibald and Scott. Hernandez was tagged out attempting to go from first to second base, which ended the inning.
JCSU held a 4-0 lead until the top the fourth inning. The Cavaliers had four hits and four runs in the fourth to tie the game. Sarah Beamer drilled a 2-RBI homerun to revitalize the UVA-Wise spirit. The Golden Bulls failed to score in the bottom of the fourth or fifth innings. Meanwhile, Beamer blasted a second 2-RBI homer in the fifth.
The Golden Bulls trailed 8-4 going into the bottom of the sixth. Junior pitcher
Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) got on base after being hit by a pitch. Peralta later scored off an RBI by Warren. That would be the last run scored by JCSU on the evening.
UVA-Wise rattled off seven runs and five hits in the seventh inning for a 15-5 victory. Rachel Hawks earned the victory on the mound for the Cavaliers, while Hailey Glover was credited with the save. Freshman pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) took the loss, pitching five innings. Sophomore
Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA) checked in and pitched the last two innings.
JCSU failed to slow down their opponent's momentum going into the second game. Both teams were scoreless again in the first. However, UVA-Wise manufactured 17 hits and 14 runs in innings two through five. The Golden Bulls failed to score a run in the second contest and only had two hits. The game ended in five innings due to the NCAA eight-run rule.
Taylor Brandts earned the victory with 11 strikeouts and two hits in five innings pitched.
The Golden Bulls will look to rebound when returning to the diamond on Saturday, March 15th against Bluefield State College. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 12 noon at Biddleville Park.
