Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team dropped game one (5-2), but won the second game (7-5) in a non-conference doubleheader against Bluefield State on Saturday, March 15th at Biddleville Park. JCSU improves to 4-10 overall, while the Lady Blues move to 1-12 in the standings.
Game one had slow start. The first four innings were scoreless for both teams. Bluefield State broke the scoring drought with two runs in the fifth. Amanda Cokeley hit a 2-RBI shot just out of the reach of the centerfielder. JCSU trailed 2-0 headed into the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore catcher
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, CA) singled to right centerfield to bring home junior
Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) and freshman
Morgan Hasty (Salem, IN). The Golden Bulls produced three hits and two runs in the fifth.
With the game tied 2-2, the Lady Blues added two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh. JCSU failed to score again in game one. Lindsey Whited earned the win on the mound for Bluefield State. She had four strikeouts while allowing six hits and two runs.
Freshman pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) was charged with the loss. She pitched five innings with three strikeouts, two walks, six hits and three runs allowed. Sophomore pitcher
Melissa Vierra (Tracy, CA) pitched the last two innings for JCSU.
In game two, the Golden Bulls faced a 3-0 deficit at the bottom of the third inning. Bluefield State scored two runs in the first and one run at the top of the third. With bases loaded and only one out, Jefferson came up with another big hit. This time, Jefferson blasted a grand slam homerun over the left field fence to grab a 4-3 lead. The inning ended with the score the same.
Neither team scored in the fourth. Junior outfielder
Jasmin Harris (Stone Mountain, GA) hit a sacrifice shot toward right centerfield to score Jefferson from third base. JCSU went into the sixth inning ahead 5-3. Chelsea Duncan answered the call for Bluefield State with a 2-RBI double to right field. Duncan tied the game 5-5 apiece.
Junior centerfielder
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, GA) hit a clutch RBI double, which brought home Hasty. Jefferson had the hot bat again with a RBI single to score Anderson. That would be the last hit and run scored in the contest. Lopez checked in and earned the save with no hits or runs allowed in the seventh and final inning.
Peralta was credited with the victory in game two. She had two strikeouts, along with eight hits and five runs allowed. JCSU snapped an eight-game winless streak with the win.
The Golden Bulls return to action on Tuesday, March 18th against Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. First pitch in this non-conference doubleheader begins at 4:00 p.m. inside Biddleville Park.
