Box Score 2 Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's softball team won the first game against Fayetteville State University 2-1, but lost the second game 8-3 in a CIAA Southern Divisional doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9th at Biddleville Park. JCSU moves to 12-18 in the overall standings, 8-6 in conference, and 5-3 in the division.
Both teams tabbed one hit and one run in the first inning. Alex Wickham hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Daniqua Taylor from third base. Sophomore catcher
Monique Jefferson (West Hills, CA) answered for JCSU with a RBI single to the left side of the field. The hit brought home freshman shortstop
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, CA) to tie the score 1-1.
Neither team mounted another run until the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Junior pitcher
Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, NY) clinched the victory for the Golden Bulls. Peralta took the mound in the seventh inning. Later in the inning, Peralta hit a single down the left field line with bases loaded. Her RBI scored junior centerfielder
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, GA) from third and won the game 2-1.
Freshman pitcher
Victoria Lopez (San Diego, CA) pitched six innings, only allowing four hits, one run, and two walks with four strikeouts. Peralta earned the victory as the winning run was scored in the seventh.
In the nightcap game, the Golden Bulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. Hernandez smacked a RBI triple to left center for the first run. Sophomore second baseman
Imani Scott (Atlanta, GA) came home off the triple. Hernandez later crossed home plate from third off a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the second, freshman first baseman
Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, FL) scored the only run off an error. After a scoreless third inning, Fayetteville erupted with three runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth. JCSU gave up three hits and committed three errors in the fifth.
The Golden Bulls trailed 8-3 heading into the sixth inning. Issues with field lighting prohibited the contest to continue. Game officials agreed to award the victory to Fayetteville State short of finishing the regulatory seven innings.
Peralta finished with a 1-1 record on the mound. She pitched four innings in game two, before Lopez checked in for relief.
JCSU returns to action on Friday, April 11th against Winston-Salem State University. This will be their last CIAA contest during the regular season. First pitch in this divisional doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Winston-Salem, NC.
