Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's outdoor track and field team set new school records on their home track during the 2014 JCSU Invitational held April 11-12th at the Irwin Belk Complex. The Golden Bulls established three new JCSU records during the weekend.
Senior sprinter
Danielle Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) placed second in the 100m hurdles with a season best time of 13.17. The 100m hurdles event was won by JCSU alumna and Danielle's sister, Shermaine Williams with a time of 13.07. Sophomore
Shamaz Quince (West Palm Beach, FL) and senior
A'Tyan Kennedy (Rock Hill, SC) also competed in the 100m hurdles. Quince had a personal best time of 14.70, while Kennedy had a season best time of 14.89.
Williams clocked a time of 11.74 in the 100m dash preliminaries. However, she did not compete in the final. Sophomore
Trudy-Ann Richards (St. Thomas, Jamaica) won the 100m event final in 12 seconds flat. Freshman duo of
Shanice Pettigrew (West Palm Beach, FL) and
Melony Woody (Clinton, MD) both had personal best of 12.49 and 12.55, respectively.
Pettigrew and Woody returned to compete in the 200m dash. Pettigrew had a personal best time of 25.30 for fourth place, while Woody clocked a personal best of 25.44 for sixth. Sophomore
Tovea Jenkins (St. James, Jamaica) finished third in a new school record time of 53.97 in the 400m. Jenkins surpasses the previous time of 54.00, set by her this season at the Auburn Classic.
Freshman
Domenique Julius-Williams (Ontario, Canada) took second in the 800m with a personal best time of 2:13.48. The time establishes a new school record for the second consecutive week. Redshirt freshman Fellan Fergusson completed her season winning the event in 2:13.01.
Senior
Samantha Elliott (Kingston, Jamaica) easily won the 400m hurdles in 58.40. Freshman
Crystal Campbell (St. Catherine, Jamaica) finished in second (1:02.86). Kennedy (1:06.81) completed the JCSU competitors in the event. Elliott remains ranked No. 1 in the event based on the TFRRS Division II performance list.
Senior
Shaquitta Anderson (Orangeburg, SC) placed second in the high jump (1.60, PB). Quince returned to place third in the long jump (5.55m, SB). Freshman Sara Louis (West Palm Beach, FL) placed sixth (5.17, PB) followed by sophomore
Kierston Johnson (Baltimore, MD) placing 13th (4.52, PB).
Senior
Bianca Parker (New Castle, DE) placed ninth in the discus (30.12m, PB). Junior
Imeshia Jones (Reidsville, NC) had a fourth place throw of 35.45m in the javelin.
The 4x100m team of Quince, Williams, Richards, and Elliott raced to a Division II leading and new season best 45.35 seconds. The 4x400m team of Kennedy, Julius-Williams, Campbell, and Jenkins closed the show winning the 4x400m in 3:44.03.
The Golden Bulls will now focus their preparations on the 2014 CIAA Outdoor Championships held in Petersburg, VA on April 18-19th.
