Men's Basketball Falls to Fayetteville St., 83-77
Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 17, 2015) – Fayetteville State hit 10 three-pointers, including seven from Devin Thompson to take an 83-77 win over Johnson C. Smith in CIAA men's basketball action at Brayboy Gym on Saturday night.
JCSU's
Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.) connected first for JCSU, putting the Golden Bulls up 2-0, then
Diondre Prat t (Morven, N.C.) knocked down a three pointer from the corner to put JCSU up 5-0.
Fayetteville State would get a three-pointer from Devin Thompson to bring the Broncos to within four points at 15-11. After a Pratt basket, JCSU would extend the lead to 20-11 on a
Joshua Linson (San Antonio, Tex.) three-pointer.
Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, Ohio) would hit a circus-like layup at the 9:01 mark to put JCSU up by 13 at 24-11. Fayetteville State would get a three of their own from Thompson then a dunk from Gatluak Thiep to make it 26-18 JCSU with 8:05 left in the half.
Fayetteville State would then draw closer at 26-25 on a free throw from Thompson and would take their first lead at 28-27 on a Jyonte' Raynor layup. That lead was short-lived as
Markell Lotharp (Marshville, N.C.) would hit a two to put JCSU back up by one at 29-28.
Fayetteville State would get a dunk from Thiep to put the Broncos up 35-31, but
Robert Davis, III (West Friendship, Md.) would get a basket with four seconds remaining to provide the 35-33 halftime margin.
The Broncos extended the lead to 53-43 on two free throws from Addison with 15:34 left. JCSU's
Diondre Pratt would then hit a three pointer to make it 53-46 with 14:49 remaining. Linson would cut the Bronco advantage to 53-49 on a three-pointer. JCSU would later cut the deficit to three at 56-53 following two free throws from
Raston Brown (Hephizibah, Ga.) with 12:59 remaining.
Following a missed dunk by Fayetteville State, JCSU would cut into the lead again, this time trimming the margin to 63-60 with 7:53 left, but the Broncos were able to earn a trip to the free throw line. Joshua Dawson would hit both shots to nudge their lead back to five at 65-60. Dawson would hit another free throw to make it 66-60 with 7:28 left.
Alandre Davis would hit two free throws to cut into the Fayetteville State lead at 66-62 but Fayetteville State would answer with a three-pointer from Devin Thompson and a dunk from Gatluak Thiep to make it 72-63 with 4:53 left.
A three from
Stedmon Lemon and one from
Markell Lotharp with 3:33 left drew the Golden Bulls to within four at 72-68. The Broncos would answer again, this time when Thompson hit from long range, his seventh of the game, to make it 75-68.
A Lotharp tip-in made it 75-71, but another basket from the Broncos pushed the lead to six at 77-71 with 2:28 to go. After a JCSU free throw and a blocked shot, the Golden Bulls had two three-point opportunities rim out. A Golden Bull foul sent Joshua Dawson to the free throw line, where he hit one shot to extend the lead to six with 1:30 to play.
JCSU's Lemon would then drive to the basket and get the layup and foul. Lemon's free throw closed the gap to 78-75 with 1:24 left. The Broncos would respond with an alley-oop dunk from Thiep, then after a JCSU missed three-pointer, would get a free throw from Dawson to make it 81-75. JCSU would then miss another three-point attempt and was forced to foul. The Broncos would extend the lead to 82-75 with 28.4 left following an Addison free throw.
A JCSU tip-in from Lotharp would bring it to 82-77, but Fayetteville State would hit a free throw to make it 83-77, which would prove to be the final.
Fayetteville State (9-8, 4-3 CIAA) got 25 points from Devin Thompson, as he went 8-15 on the night, including a 7-12 mark from long range. Marquette Hill and Joshua Dawson each managed double-doubles as they both connected for 14 points. Hill contributed 10 rebounds while Dawson dished out 11 assists.
The Golden Bulls (9-9, 3-4 CIAA) were led by
Markell Lotharp's 19 points and 12 rebounds. JCSU also got 17 points from
Stedmon Lemon, 13 from
Diondre Pratt and 10 points from
Emilio Parks.
Johnson C. Smith returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, Jan. 21 for a CIAA contest at St. Augustine's. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
