Women's Basketball Falls 84-82 in Wild CIAA Contest at St. Augustine's
Box Score Raleigh, N.C. (Jan. 21, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball fell to home standing St. Augustine's 84-82, in a game that featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes in CIAA basketball action from Emery Gymnasium.
The Golden Bulls would jump out to a quick 6-3 lead on a
Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) three-pointer with 18:21left. Throughout most of the first half, neither team could build a substantial lead, as the teams
JCSU would go scoreless for nearly three minutes, enabling the Lady Falcons to go on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 37-32, forcing a JCSU timeout with 4:14 to play. The Golden Bulls'
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) would stop the run with a layup in traffic to pull JCSU within three at the 4:01 mark. St. Augustine's would get a Terri Jacobs layup and a Li'Esa Barnett jumper to give provide the largest Lady Falcon lead of the game at seven points (41-34) with 2:16 remaining.
JCSU would get an
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) layup and SAU would get a Porscha Walton bucket with three seconds left to provide the 43-36 halftime margin for the Lady Falcons.
In the second half, Wilkerson would draw JCSU to within four points at 46-42 with a layup at the 16:59 mark. Walton would stretch the lead to 49-43, but Jordan would respond for JCSU by knocking down a three-pointer from the corner to draw to within three points at 49-46 with 15:35 left. Following a St. Augustine's turnover Jordan would trim the SAU margin to 49-48 with 14:49 left.
JCSU would earn their first lead since the 5:35 mark of the first half when Phifer connected on a three pointer to put JCSU up 51-50. That lead would be short-lived as the Lady Falcons' would get a Terri Jacobs layup to reclaim the one-point margin at 52-51. An
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) jumper would tie the game at 53-53 with 13:04 left, the eighth tie of the game.
The ninth tie of the game (60-60) was forced by two free throws by Wilkerson, but SAU would build the lead to 69-62 on two straight baskets by Jacobs, then a three-pointer from McCombs. A JCSU basket by Jones and a free throw would cut the Lady Falcon lead to 69-65 with 7:46 remaining.
SAU's McCombs would nail a three-pointer to make it 72-65 but JCSU would get a fast-break basket from Jones with 6:02 left to once again trim the lead to five points at 72-67. Following a timeout, the Golden Bulls would force a turnover and capitalize when
Ashley Porter scored on a nice pass from Jordan to cut the lead to 72-69. A fast-break layup from SAU's McCombs would boost the lead to74-69.
The Golden Bulls would again cut the Lady Falcon lead to one with 4:16 left on a Wilkerson layup, but again, SAU would respond with a Jacobs basket.
JCSU's
Shanequa Phifer would hit her fifth three of the game to provide the 76-76 tie with 3:41 left. After trading possessions, Jones would give JCSU the 80-76 lead with a layup, followed by a steal and a fast break layup at the 2:36 mark.
St. Augustine's would get a three from McCombs with 1:53 left to draw within one at 80-79 with 1:42 left, forcing a JCSU timeout. Out of the timeout, JCSU answered with a jumper by Hall to give JCSU the lead at 82-81 with 1:17 left. A Lady Falcon jumper and free throw would give St. Augustine's an 84-82 lead that would prove to be the final as JCSU jumper with three seconds left from
Asha Jordan was off the mark.
JCSU got 23 points from
Shanequa Phifer, as she finished 8-15 on the night while hitting five three-pointers.
Asha Jordan had 14 points and
Anika Jones scored a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
St. Augustine's was paced by Terri Jacobs 21 points and 21 rebound effort. Fellow Lady Falcon Regime McCombs netted 20 points while Porscha Walton had 19. Jeanne-Marie Wilson also chipped in 11 points in the win.
JCSU falls to 15-3, 5-2 in CIAA play while St. Augustine's improves to 10-6, 4-3 in CIAA play.
The Golden Bulls will look to regroup before heading to Salisbury to take on rival Livingstone on Saturday, Jan. 24.
