JCSU Women's Basketball Runs Wild In 68-46 Win Over Winston-Salem State
Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 28, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team broke a two-game losing skid and cruised to a 68-46 win over Winston-Salem State at Brayboy Gym on Wednesday evening.
JCSU's
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) each scored 12 points and
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with 10 points. Porter and Wilkerson also had 10 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
JCSU took an early 8-6 lead on a
Kaylah Gholson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) layup and would never trail, eventually leading by as many as 14 in the first half.
In the second half, JCSU would build the lead to 24 points (53-29) following a
Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) three pointer with 8:34 left. At the 4:37 mark, JCSU jumped ahead by 25 (59-34) on an
Ashley Porter layup. The Golden Bulls cruised the rest of the way, taking the 68-46 win.
Winston-Salem State shot 26.6% (17-64) including a 6-18 mark from the long range. Johnson C. Smith would shoot 45.1% on 23-51 shooting.
The Golden Bulls break a two-game skid and improve to 16-4, 6-3 in CIAA play while Winston-Salem State falls to 7-12, 3-6 in CIAA action.
