JCSU Women's Basketball Starts 2015 With CIAA Win at Bowie St.
Box Score Johnson C. Smith Rolls Past Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs 71-57
BOWIE, Md. - The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team started 2015 with a 71-57 CIAA road win at Bowie State on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Bulls improve to 11-1, (1-0 CIAA) while the loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 5-6 overall (0-2 CIAA).
BSU junio Ty-Nita Baker led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points and added six rebounds while handing out a game-high five assists. Seniors Jasmine McIntosh and Alisha Burley added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Donia Naylor fell just short of a double-double, recording nine points and 13 rebounds.
Johnson C. Smith had three players scored in double figures with Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) leading the attack with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, which included 5-of-9 behind the arc. Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) contributed 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and pulled down a half dozen rebounds. Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) came off the Golden Bulls bench to records 10 points, seven rebounds and a game-high four steals. Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) also contributed off the JCSU bench adding eight points and tied Brent for team-high rebound honors with seven.
Both teams made 33 percent of their field goals with Johnson C. Smith ending the game on 21-of-63 field goal shooting and Bowie State was 19-of-56 from the floor in the contest. Turnovers were plentiful as well with the Lady Bulldogs committing 27 and the Lady Golden Bulls turned the ball over 23 times.
Johnson C. Smith controlled the glass, holding a 49-37 advantage and the Lady Bulldogs bench outscored BSU's bench 45-5.
With Bowie State holding an early 10-9 lead, Johnson C. Smith used a 12-0 run to take control of the game at 21-10 with 7:46 left in the first half.
A pair of Naylor free throws and a Baker layup trimmed the Bowie State deficit to seven (21-14), but Johnson C. Smith would not allow the Lady Bulldogs to get any closer.
Johnson C. Smith closed out the first 20 minutes of action shooting 44 percent (11-of-25) compared to 29 percent (7-of-24) for Bowie State.
JCSU, winners of their previous seven games, will next head to Richmond to take on Virginia Union. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
