The loss snaps JCSU's eight-game winning streak

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Jan. 8, 2015) –  The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team could not overcome a sluggish first half and poor shooting and fell to visiting Chowan 66-49 in their home CIAA opener at Brayboy Gym.  The loss snaps JCSU's eight-game winning streak.

Chowan started the game hot, bolting to an early 14-6 lead at the 11:44 mark on a jumper by guard Courtney Smith.  Chowan's Rachel Gostomski extended the Hawk lead to 19-13 on a three-pointer at 7:38.  Gostomski would then be fouled on a long-range attempt and then convert all three free throws to make it 24-15 with 6:36 remaining in the first half.

JCSU would trim the first half lead to six at 28-22 on a Sharon Uyinmwen (London, England) layup at the 3:25 mark.  JCSU would cut the deficit to four at 30-26 with a layup from Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.), but Chowan got a bucket at the halftime buzzer from Alisha Mobley to lead 32-26 at the break.

The Hawks would open the second half on an 11-0 run to put the visitors up 43-26 at the 16:13 mark, capped by a three-pointer by Chantel Roberts.

JCSU would get no closer than 10 at 49-39 on a pair of two free throws by Kaylah Gholson (Brooklyn, N.Y.).  Chowan would extend the lead to as many as 20 down the stretch after an Alishia Mobley free throw with 2:27 remaining.

JCSU would only manage one field goal in the final four minutes of play and Chowan would go to only their second win all-time over JCSU with the final of 66-49.

Chowan went 21-46 (45.7%) from the field while JCSU shot a dismal 18-70 (25.7%).  Chowan was paced by Gostomski's 23 points.  Teammate Alisha Mobley had 14 for the Hawks.

Johnson C. Smith was led by Jordan's 14 points.  Ashley Porter was the only other Golden Bull in double figures with 11.

The Golden Bulls stumble to 12-2 (2-1 CIAA) on the year while Chowan improves to 7-7 and 2-1 in CIAA play.

JCSU will have to regroup quickly, as they welcome Elizabeth City State to Brayboy Gym for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Saturday, Jan. 10.
