WSSU Claims 3-0 Win Over JCSU Volleyball

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 12, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith volleyball team started hot and held a seven point lead in the first set, but Winston-Salem State made a furious rally taking set one and cruising the rest of the way in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-9) win over the Golden Bulls in Brayboy Gym on Monday night.

Leading 19-12 in set one, JCSU was poised to take the set, but Winston-Salem State went on a 13-2 run to take the 25-21 win.  The Rams were able to knot the set at 21-21 following a JCSU attacking error and took the lead on a JCSU service error.  The Rams then closed the set on an ace from Michel Murray-Garcia.

In set two, the two teams battled to an 11-11 tie, but the Rams got some breathing room, going on an 7-1 run to make it 18-12.  JCSU could get no closer, as WSSU took the 25-17 win.  WSSU then was able to jump out to a 10-1 lead in set three and were never threatened, taking the final  set 25-10.

JCSU (3-12, 1-6 CIAA, 0-4 Southern Division) was led by Salesse Stovall (Roanoke, Va.), as she notched six kills on the evening. Senior teammate Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.) had five kills in the loss while setter Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 16 assists.  Shanae Hughes (Orangeburg, S.C.) led JCSU defensively with seven digs.

WSSU (10-5, 7-0 CIAA, 4-0 Southern Division) got seven kills from Olivia Owens and 16 assists from Jasmine Smith.  Smith also had six aces in the win.

The Golden Bulls will host Fayetteville State on Thursday evening, Oct. 15 in a CIAA Southern Division match at 6:00 p.m.
