JCSU Football Travels to St. Augustine's on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 28, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith football team will seek to ruin
St. Augustine's Halloween Homecoming, as the Golden Bulls travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Falcons at the George Williams Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
The Golden Bulls (3-5, 2-3 CIAA, 2-1 Southern Division) are coming off another stellar defensive performance last Saturday when they made the plays late in the game, forcing an incomplete pass on the last play of the game to take the 17-10 win over Shaw.
In that game, senior linebacker
Austin Jacques (Springdale, Md.) and safetyÂ
Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) sparkled. Jacques had 19 total tackles, 11 being of the solo variety. Jacques also had four tackles for loss (-14 yards) and a half sack (-3 yards). Jacques currently leads the NCAA in solo tackles with 69 stops.
Thomas backed up his career day just a week before against Fayetteville State, picking off three Shaw passes and logging 67 return yards. Thomas now stands as the NCAA leader (All Divisions) in interceptions with 10 and return yards with 232.
The JCSU offense looks to get back on track after a subpar performance against Shaw. The Bear defense limited the JCSU rushing attack to 26 total yards while the passing game only managed 112 yards. Wide receiver
Roderick Carter (Miami, Fla.) secured JCSU's only offensive touchdown of the day on a seven yard pass in the first quarter. Carter finished with two catches for nine yards. Sure-handed receiver
Fred Scott (Stone Mountain, Ga.) was also held in check by Shaw, only catching four balls for 11 yards. Sophomore
Bedrick Yobo (Charlotte, N.C.) led the way, hauling in a catch good for 62 yards.
JCSU kickers have been solid this season with junior placekicker
Erik Amaya (Kannapolis, N.C.) connecting on all 21 of his point-after attempts and 4-of-8 of his field goal attempts. Punter
Matias Lambrecht (Venice, Fla.) has helped pin the opposition deep, kicking for a 38.4 average. He has placed 16 kicks inside the 20-yard line and boomed six kicks for over 50 yards, including a season-high 64 yard punt against Shaw.
St. Augustine's (0-8, 0-5 CIAA, 0-4 Southern Division) looks to break a season-long eight game losing streak. All told, the Falcons have lost 11 of their last 12 games dating back to Oct. 18, 2014. Their lone win in that stretch was a 16-9 home win over Shaw on Nov. 8, 2014.
Roderick Davenport leads the Falcons rushing attack with 456 yards and has scored their only two rushing touchdowns this season. Quarterback Julius Murphy has thrown for 597 yards and a score while teammate Jovahn Williams has thrown for 240 yards and five scores.
Falcon receiver Jordan Turkvant has collected 24 receptions for 314 yards while scoring five touchdowns on the season. Defensively, SAU is paced by Tray King. King has recorded 49 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss. He has also recovered a fumble.
