Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 17, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team weathered a fast start from Catawba and forced the fourth-ranked Lady Indians into 25 turnovers on the way to a 72-56 road win on Tuesday night at Goodman Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C.
Catawba wasted no time, going on an 8-0 run to begin the game until
Sharon Uniymwen (London, England) ended the drought with a three from the right wing. That basket ignited a 19-4 run that saw JCSU take the 19-12 lead after the first quarter. In that span, JCSU was able to harass Catawba into 10 turnovers that led to 12 JCSU points.
In the second quarter, JCSU continued to force turnovers and convert, building their largest lead at 32-20 at the 4:37 mark of the second after a
Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) fast break jumper. Catawba would trim the JCSU advantage to 32-25 after a free throw from Brianna Hodges with 2:15 remaining in the quarter. The Golden Bulls quickly regrouped and pushed the lead back to 10 points at 35-25 after a pair of free throws from
Courtney Dollison (Gainesville, Fla.). JCSU would then force another turnover and Jordan's three-pointer at the halftime buzzer was too strong, as the Golden Bulls went into the break with the 35-25 advantage.
In the third quarter, Catawba cut the JCSU lead to seven points on two separate occasions, but each time, JCSU responded by stretching the cushion, eventually to 16 points after a
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) jumper that made it 54-38 with 17 seconds left.
The fourth quarter was much of the same, as Catawba could get no closer than XX points, with the Golden Bulls taking the 72-56 win.
"This was a great road win for our team," said head coach
Stephen Joyner, Jr. "We knew coming in that it would be a great challenge because they are very well-coached and are very talented. We are extremely fortunate that we played well this evening." Joyner continued, "They are highly-ranked in their region and will definitely be a force as the season wears on."
JCSU's
Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) scored a career-high 22 points on an 8-for-13 shooting effort, with three coming from long range. Her previous high came on a 21-point outing against Seton Hill on Nov. 29, 2014.
Lynch was the only other JCSU player in double-figures, as she scored 10 points on the night. Senior's
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) finished with nine and six points, respectively.
JCSU shot 45.8% (27-59) including a 33% effort from long range and 76.5% (13-17) from the line.
Catawba was paced by Bri Johnson's 19 points while teammate Terri Rogers had 10.
The win improves JCSU to 3-0 on the season while Catawba falls to 2-1.
JCSU will return to play on Nov. 23 when they travel to USC-Aiken for a 7:00 tilt.
