Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 18, 2015) –  The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team survived a harrowing second half and a determined Carson-Newman team and took a 95-92 nonconference road win at the Holt Fieldhouse in Jefferson City, Tenn. on Wednesday evening.  The win marked the 499th coaching victory for head coach Stephen Joyner, Sr.

After holding a slim three-point advantage at halftime, JCSU and Carson-Newman battled through 10 ties and eight lead changes as neither team could secure a lead larger than three points until the Golden Bulls went on an 11-0 run that made it 91-82 with 1:21 left, but Carson-Newman made a furious comeback aided by a three-pointer from Charles Clark that cut the lead to 91-85.  After a JCSU foul, the Golden Bulls bench was called for a delay of game technical following a foul-out.

That technical sent Clark to the line for five free throws with 47 seconds remaining.  Clark hit 4-of-5 of the free throws to close the Eagles to within 91-89.  After a pair of free throws from senior Alandre Davis (Florence, S.C.) that extended the JCSU lead to 93-89, Carson-Newman's Andy Barnett drilled a three pointer with 10 seconds left to cut the JCSU lead to one point at 93-92.

JCSU was able to burn some time off the clock until the Eagles finally caught up with sophomore guard Robert Davis, III (West Friendship, Md.), sending him  to the line with 1-second remaining.

Davis calmly knocked both shots down and following a timeout, Carson-Newman's last-second angled shot from midcourt was short, enabling JCSU to escape with the 95-92 win.

JCSU got a game-high 29 points on a 10-of-17 shooting effort from senior Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.).  Lemon was also 3-of-5 from long range and 6-of-8 from the foul line.  He also led JCSU with eight rebounds.  Diondre Pratt (Morven, N.C.) poured in 20 points while Alandre Davis and Robert Davis each had 11 points and five assists.  Dre Huntley (Monroe, N.C.) also had five assists for JCSU.

Collectively, JCSU shot 51.5% (34-66) from the field and 51.9% (14-27) from long range.  JCSU was also efficient from the free throw line, going 13-of-15 for 86.7%.

The Golden Bulls also coaxed Carson-Newman into 19 turnovers that led to 23 points.

JCSU (2-1) will open their home schedule this Friday night in Brayboy Gym at 7:30 p.m., taking on the Apprentice School in the JCSU Tip-Off Classic.  Livingstone and Benedict will face off in the first game at 5:30 p.m.
