Volleyball Falls at Livingstone, 3-1

Box Score Salisbury, N.C. (Nov. 4, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith volleyball team got two 12 kill performances from senior Salesse Stovall (Roanoke, Va.) and freshman Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) but it was not enough, as Livingstone took a 3-1 CIAA Southern Division win at Trent Gym on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Bears jumped out to an early 10-4 lead by JCSU (4-19, 2-12 CIAA) clawed its way back, eventually taking a 17-14 advantage in set one.  The two teams battled to a 21-21 tie, butLivingstone  (9-14, 4-9 CIAA) went on a 4-0 run to close the first set, winning 25-21.  The clinching point came when Livingstone's Rukiya Garland delivered an ace to close out the set.

In set two, JCSU was the one that jumped out to a big lead at 6-2.  Livingstone came roaring back, going up by as many as seven points at 21-14 after a kill from Jekisha Rhymes.  JCSU could not mount a comeback, with the Blue Bears taking the set 25-16.

JCSU got on track in set three.  With the set tied at 14-14, JCSU went on a 9-3 run to take a 23-17 advantage.  Livingstone came back, closing to within 24-21, but sophomore Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.) knocked down a kill to take the 25-21 win.

Set four would also be close as JCSU came back from an early 13-5 deficit to knot the score at 15-15.  Livingstone then surged ahead 23-15 and would then close the match with a Lareecia Swiney kill.

In addition to the big night from Stovall and Smoots, JCSU senior setter Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.) dished out 25 assists.  Freshman Shanae Hughes (Orangeburg, S.C.) also had 17 assists on the evening.  Defensively,Jana Ajdukovic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Raven Bandy (Loganville, Ga.) had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

JCSU will return to play on Monday, Nov. 9, travelling to division foe Winston-Salem State for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
