JCSU Women's Basketball Blows Out JWU, 88-56

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Dec 4, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team used a 20-3 run in the first quarter, building a 19-point lead and never looked back as they hammered visiting Johnson & Wales 88-56 on Friday morning during JCSU's annual Education Day game at Brayboy Gym.
Leading 7-5 at the 6:59 mark, JCSU embarked on the aforementioned run, bolting to a 27-8 lead after senior
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) nailed a mid-range jumper with 2:32 remaining. The lead would balloon to 39-17 with 6:36 left in the second quarter after
Krista White (Dayton, Ohio) provided an easy layup after a JWU turnover. JWU would get to within 18 points at 46-28 on a
Vanderia Shackleford jumper with 1:46 left before the half.
After leading 48-28 at the break, JCSU steadily built the lead to as many as 30 points in the third quarter at 64-34 after another Porter layup. JWU got to within 25 points, but JCSU expanded the lead to 75-43 by the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, JCSU gained its biggest lead at 35 points on two occasions, with the latter being at the 5:28 mark, leading 82-47. The Wildcats could get no closer than 30 points the rest of the way, eventually falling 88-56.
JCSU harassed the Wildcats into 38 turnovers that led to 46 JCSU points. The Golden Bulls also controlled play in the paint, outscoring JWU 60-28.
JCSU also shot well, going 35-of-66 from the field, good for 53% while JWU shot 41.9% from the field on an 18-of-43 effort.
Senior
Ashley Porter led the way with her first double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.
Krista White and
Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) also scored in double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Hall also pulled down eight rebounds.
With the win, the Golden Bulls improve to 5-3 overall while Johnson & Wales falls to 2-5.
JCSU will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 6 for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference matchup, hosting Virginia State.
