Women's Basketball Has No Trouble With Virginia State, Wins 65-49

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Dec 6, 2015) - The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team made a 15-0 run over the first seven minutes of the game and never trailed, taking an easy 65-49 non-conference win over Virginia State on Sunday afternoon in Brayboy Gym.
JCSU's
Jaylaan Dillard (Raleigh, N.C.) opened the rout by nailing a three-pointer from the left side on the first JCSU possession of the day. After consecutive baskets from
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
Quinesha Lynch (Rocky Mount, N.C.) JCSU had an early 7-0 cushion. As the Trojans continued to struggle,
Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) scored two baskets and freshman
A'Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) added a score to put JCSU up 13-0. After another Brent score, VSU finally got on the board when Wynterra Pittman hit a jumper to make it 15-2 JCSU will three minutes remaining in the period.
After leading 19-6 after the end of the first, JCSU would build the lead to 17 points after a
Larryqua Hall (Atlanta, Ga.) jumper at the 9:21 mark that made it 23-6. Virginia State would whittle the lead to 24-12 following a Stephanie Brown layup, but the Golden Bulls would take it back to 17 at 31-14 after a three-pointer from Ussery with 4:23 to play before the half. JCSU would gain the 21 point advantage at 35-14 after a
MaryAnna Moore (Laurens, S.C.) basket with 43 seconds left. Virginia State could not score again the period after missing a shot and committing two turnovers.
In the third quarter, JCSU was able to build the lead to as many as 25 after Lynch buried two free throws with 4:11 remaining that made it 45-20. The Golden Bulls would lead 49-31 by the end of the third period and then built the lead to 21 points and never led by less than 14 points the rest of the way, taking the 65-49 win.
JCSU was able to shoot 41% from the field on a 25-of-61 effort while holding VSU to just 31.7% (20-of-63). The Golden Bulls also controlled the inside, outscoring the Trojans 46-26 in the paint and 16- 12 on fast break opportunities.
The Golden Bulls had two players secure double-double on the afternoon in seniors
Amena Brent and
Ashley Porter. Brent had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Porter had 10 points and 13 rebounds.
MaryAnna Moore also collected 11 rebounds for JCSU while scoring six points. All told, JCSU dominated the rebounding battle, securing 54 rebounds to VSU's 25.
With the win, JCSU improves to 6-3 overall while Virginia State falls to 2-4 on the season.
JCSU returns to the floor on Saturday, Dec. 12, hosting USC-Aiken in a 3:00 p.m. game at Brayboy Gym.
