JCSU Softball Splits Home Opening Doubleheader with Salem International

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Feb.13, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith softball team split a doubleheader with Salem International in the home openers on Friday afternoon at Biddleville Park.

In game one, JCSU struck first in the first inning when Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) laced a double to left field.  With two outs, Morgan Hasty (Salem, Ind.) drew a walk and Monique Jefferson (West Hills, Ca.) came through with a two-RBI double down the left field line to put JCSU up 2-0.

Salem International, playing in the first game of the season, managed to scratch across a run in the second inning on a Kayla Lynch single that scored Kayla Guta.

In the third inning, the Tigers were able to take the 3-2 lead when Alyssa Discepola knocked an RBI single to left field.  In the home half of the third JCSU took the lead for good, scoring four runs.  JCSU got two walks, then the runners advanced on a passed ball, putting runners on second and third.  Hasty then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.  JCSU would push a run across following a fielder's choice, then Miranda Ricafrente (Jacksonville, Fla.) delivered an RBI single followed by a two RBI single from Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, Ga.) that put JCSU up 6-3 and chased SIU starting pitcher Kayla Lynch.

JCSU would add three more runs in the fourth inning  thanks to another Jefferson two-RBI double and closed the game in the sixth inning after Breanna Archibald (Wendell, N.C.) laced a triple to the left center gap, driving in two runs and providing the 11-3 final.

Monique Jefferson led the effort in game one, going 3-for-4 ,finishing with 5 RBI. Archibald, Ricafrente and Anderson all finished with two RBI apiece.  Victoria Lopez (San Diego, Ca.) struck out three in the complete game outing.

In game two, SIU jumped on JCSU in the first for three runs after an RBI double from Chryssofis and a Lynch single that drove in two runs, putting the Tigers up 3-0. SIU would get a homer from Chryssofis in the third inning to jump ahead 4-0, but JCSU's Hasty drove an 0-1 offering over the left center fence for her third homer of the year in the fourth inning, bringing the Golden Bulls to within 4-1.

SIU would get two more in the fifth inning and added another in the sixth to take the 7-1 lead.  JCSU would draw closer thanks to two doubles, the first from Jefferson, and the latter from Archibald, which allowed Jefferson to score.  SIU then controlled the rest of the game, taking the 7-2 final and salvaging the split.

In game two, Hasty finished 1-for-3 with the homerun.  Jefferson and Archibald also finished 1-for-3 in game two.  Stacy Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) struck out five in the loss, but took the pitching loss.

With the split, JCSU evens its record to 2-2 on the season, while Salem International is 1-1.

JCSU's scheduled doubleheader against Coker on Feb. 15 has been rescheduled due to the forecasted frigid weather.  A makeup date will be announced at a later date.
