JCSU Women's Basketball Topples Livingstone, 70-66

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 15, 2015) - The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team came back from a 14 point second half deficit to down rival Livingstone 70-66 on Sunday afternoon in Brayboy Gym.
After being down only three at halftime, Livingstone went on a 13-3 run to start the second half, jumping ahead 51-37 on a LaBrea Walker three pointer at the 14:43 mark. JCSU would then start the comeback, cutting the lead to eight points on an
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) layup with 13:18 left.
The Golden Bulls would continue the charge, slicing the lead to three points when
Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) nailed a three pointer trimming the Livingstone lead to 53-50 with 11:06 left. JCSU would then take the 54-53 lead following two free throws from
Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.).The teams would battle back and forth down the stretch with JCSU taking the lead for good after a
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) layup with 4:07 left that made it 64-62. The Blue Bears would trim the lead to two points on two separate occasions but could not take the lead. JCSU then got a free throw from Jones to boost the lead to 68-65 with 1:21 left. Livingstone's Amber Curtis added a free throw, cutting the lead to two once again, but Jones responded again with 59 seconds remaining that made it 70-66.
Livingstone could not get another shot off the rest of the way due to the smothering JCSU defense.
JCSU got 18 points from
Anika Jones and 13 points each from
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and
LaKendra Wilkerson. Livingstone got 17 points from LaBrea Walker.
The win improves JCSU to 19-6, 9- 5 in CIAA play while Livingstone falls to 4-19, 4-10 in league play.
JCSU travels to Winston-Salem State for a 5:30 p.m. start on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
