JCSU Falls at WSSU, 98-93

Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. (Feb.18, 2015) –  The Johnson C. Smith men's basketball team battled back from a six point halftime deficit and took the lead late in the game, but Winston-Salem State fought off the Golden Bulls and took a 98-93 CIAA win at the Gaines Center on Wednesday evening.

In the second half, the Rams bolted used a 6-3 spurt to open the second half and led by 11 (65-54) following the second of two free throws from Marquez Jones.  JCSU would then go on a tear, cutting the Ram lead to two points at the 14:32 mark after a  Stedmon Lemon (Lithonia, Ga.) three pointer. 

Winston-Salem State would stretch the lead back to seven points on two occasions, the latter the 10:33 mark thanks to a Donta Harper layup.  JCSU would then chip away at the WSSU lead once more and would take the 78-77 lead when Josh Linson (San Antonio, Tex) nailed a three pointer with 6:17 remaining.

Down the stretch, the two teams battled through several lead changes, but the Rams would take the lead for good at 94-91 with 1:24 left after a Juwan Wells three pointer.  JCSU would cut it to 94-93 when Raston Brown (Hephizibah, Ga.) converted a layup with 46 seconds left.

WSSU would salt the game away from the line, with WyKevin Bazemore and  Terrell Leach each knocking down a pair, providing the 98-93 final.

JCSU senior center Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, Ohio) was nearly unstoppable, as the connected for 26 points on 8-12 shooting.  Parks also hit 10-12 free throw attempts on the evening and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.  Fellow teammate Josh Linson was equally as impressive, as he also scored 26 points.  Linson went 8-11 from behind the arc, his best output of the season.  Stedmon Lemon also hit three long balls of his own and finished with 13 points on the evening.

Winston-Salem State was paced by WyKevin Bazemore's 25 points on 8-13 shooting.  Bazemore also hauled in 10 rebounds.   Marquez Jones finished with 20 points, while Terrell Leach and Donta Harper finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

JCSU shot 51.7% from the field, including 54.5% from long-range, while WSSU went for 46.3%, 33.3% from three point range.

The loss drops JCSU to 13-13 overall, 7-8 in CIAA play while WSSU improves to 16-8, 9-6 in league play.

The Golden Bulls travel to Shaw on Saturday, Feb. 21 for the regular-season finale.
