Women's Basketball Rolls Past WSSU, 76-62

Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. (Feb.18, 2015) - The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team led by as many as 17 points and never trailed en route to a 76-62 CIAA win at Winston-Salem State on Wednesday afternoon at the Gaines Center.

JCSU jumped to an 8-0 lead out of the gate after a Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) three pointer at the 16:58 mark. A steal from teammate LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) set up Phifer's long-ball.

The Golden Bulls would see their lead shrink to only three points (16-13) after WSSU's Jovanah Graham knocked down a jumper with 9:36 to play in the first half. JCSU would go on to build an 11 point lead at 33-22 following a Wilkerson layup at the 1:22 mark. WSSU would close the JCSU lead to 33-27 with 10 seconds left in the half when Dionna Scott hit a layup.
In the second half, JCSU would build the to 40-30 with16:41 to play when Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) knocked down a free throw. After the Rams closed the gap to 40-36, JCSU would go on a 12-0 run to make it 52-36 after another three pointer from Phifer with 12:23 to play.

WSSU could not get the JCSU lead under 11 points the rest of the way. JCSU would gain their largest lead of the game (70-53) after two free throws from Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.). The Golden Bulls would cruise the rest of the way, taking the 76-62 win.

JCSU had five players score in double figures with Shanequa Phifer leading the way with 21 points, while hitting five three pointers on the afternoon. LaKendra Wilkerson added 13 points and nine rebounds and Ashley Porter had another double-double, knocking down 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Alishia Mosley (Bass, N.C.) had 10 points in the effort, shooting 3-5 and going a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

WSSU was led by Dionna Scott with 18 points. The only other Ram to score in double figures was Taylar Wells with 15 points.

The win boosts JCSU to 20-6 overall, 10-5 in CIAA play. WSSU falls to 10-15, 6-9 in league action.

The Golden Bulls look to avenge an earlier loss on Saturday when it travels to CIAA foe Shaw in the regular season finale.
