JCSU Sports Information
Box Score Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith men's basketball team shot 53.3 percent and led Shaw by as many as 15 points but had to withstand a late rally to take a 68-64 win at Spaulding Gym on Saturday afternoon in the CIAA regular season finale for both squads.
The Golden Bulls had four players score in double figures and were led by
Josh Linson's (San Antonio, Tex.) 21 points. Linson went 6-8 from long range and 7-9 from the floor in the win. Senior
Emilio Parks (Ashtabula, Ohio) had 12 points on the afternoon while teammates
Raston Brown (Hephzibah, Ga.) and
Diondre Pratt (Morven, N.C.) each netted 10 points in the win. Brown led JCSU with six rebounds.
Freshman guard
Robert Davis, III (West Friendship, Md.) dished seven assists and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line for JCSU.
With JCSU leading 54-44 with 9:35 to play, Shaw went on an 11-1 run over the next four minutes to knot the game at 55-55 after a Koron Reed free throw. JCSU's Linson answered with a three pointer, but Shaw came back to take their only lead of the game (60-59) at the 3:18 mark after a Larry Richardson three pointer. Linson regained the lead for JCSU after nailing a jumper and Davis added two free throws with 2:07 to put JCSU up 63-60.
A
Raston Brown tip in with 1:12 remaining pushed the JCSU lead to 65-60, but Shaw's Reed trimmed the lead to one (65-64) after a dunk and a tip in with 19 seconds remaining. Reed was fouled on the play but his game-tying free throw was off the mark. JCSU was able to corral the rebound and
Raston Brown would hit two free throws to put JCSU up 67-64 with 16 seconds left. Following a Shaw turnover, the Bears were forced to foul. Linson then hit a free throw to make it 68-64 with 11 seconds left.
Shaw's last chance to draw closer wasn't to be, as Larry Richardson's three pointer missed and the put back attempt also missed. JCSU's Pratt secured the rebound and preserved the 68-64 road win.
JCSU will next set their sights towards the 2015 CIAA Tournament on Feb. 24-28 at the Time Warner Cable Arena. Game times and tournament seeds will be announced by the CIAA office on Sunday, Feb. 22.
