Box Score Raleigh, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team let a five point halftime lead slip away and fell to Shaw 78-71 at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Shaw put together a 13-0 run to start the second half to jump ahead 41-33. JCSU's
LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) connected on a jumper to stop the Shaw run with 16:09 left.
JCSU clawed back into the game to trail 46-43 after
Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) drained a three pointer at the 10:46 mark.
Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) brought the Golden Bulls to within one (50-49) following a jumper with 8:31 left.
Shaw extended the lead to 10 points (63-53) with 4:53 left following a free throw from Fantasha Tyson.
JCSU would trim the lead to seven points when
Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) knocked down a three pointer with 55 seconds left. Shaw got two free throws each from Tyson and Kaula Jacks and held off JCSU the rest of the way and took the 78-71 win.
The loss drops JCSU to 20-7 overall and 10-6 in CIAA play. Shaw improves to 18-10, 11-5 in league action.
The Golden Bulls were led by
Shanequa Phifer's 20 points.
Anika Jones had 13 points while
Ashley Porter secured a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Seedings for the 2015 CIAA Tournament will be announced by the CIAA office on Sunday, Feb. 21.
