Women's Basketball Forces 33 FSU Turnovers, Wins 74-67

Box Score Fayetteville, N.C. (Feb. 7, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith women's basketball team built a large first half lead and forced 33 Fayetteville State turnovers and went on to a 74-67 CIAA win at Capel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Shanequa Phifer (Salisbury, N.C.) and Anika Jones (Shelby, N.C.) each hit three-pointers in the opening minutes, putting the Golden Bulls up 10-4 at the 17:26 mark.

Following an FSU technical foul, the JCSU lead would be extended to 14-7 on a Jones free throw.  JCSU would get another three from Phifer to lead 17-7 with 15:32 left.

The Golden Bulls would go up 19-7 following a layup from Alishia Mosely (Bass, N.C.)  with 14:54 left.

JCSU would go up 42-20, their largest of the first half, following a LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) layup. Wilkerson was fouled on the play, but could not convert the free throw for the thee-point play.  Fayetteville State would battle back, closing the JCSU lead to 44-29 after a free throw from Bria Robinson.

Kaylah Gholson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would put JCSU up 46-29 with a driving layup after she split two FSU defenders with 1:16 remaining.  Fayetteville State would close the half with a Makayla Williams layup to provide the 46-31 halftime margin.

FSU would begin the second half by cutting into the JCSU lead.  Doreen Richardson would bring the Lady Broncos to within 11 at 46-35 following a jumper.  FSU would cut into the lead again, this time taking it under double-digits when Brineshia Powell hit a layup and was fouled.  Her free throw trimmed the JCSU lead to 46-38 with 17:28 to play.

Jones would get a layup for JCSU to extend the lead to 49-38, then Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) forced a turnover and went in for the uncontested layup to put the Golden Bulls up 51-38.  Fayetteville State would then turn it over again, this time leading to a Phifer three pointer from deep in the corner to put JCSU up 54-38.

Another FSU turnover would lead to more JCSU points, this time when Jones received the back-door pass from Wilkerson for an easy layup, extending the Golden Bull lead to 56-38.   After the two teams traded turnovers, Fayetteville State would get a jumper from Powell making it 56-40.

An FSU basket from Middleton and a a three pointer from Williams trimmed the JCSU lead to 56-45 with 11:10 remaining.   After a JCSU free throw, Bria Evans made it 57-47 before the Jones made it 59-47 on a jumper of her own.  Jones would also score on a fast break layup after forcing a Lady Bronco turnover, making it 61-49 at the 9:41 mark.  JCSU upped the lead to 63-51 following two free throws from Gholson with 8:58 to play. 

JCSU's Amena Brent (Chicago, Ill.) made it 66-54 on a layup with 6:14 left, but FSU responded with a layup, pulling to within 10 points at 66-56 with 5:59 remaining.   Following a Golden Bull turnover, the Lady Broncos were able to cut it to eight points at 68-60  following an Evans basket.  JCSU worked the shot clock on their next possession and Kayla Gholson was able to rebound a missed three and score the easy layup to extend the JCSU lead to 70-60.

Fayetteville State closed to within seven after a three-pointer, but  JCSU's Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was able to rebound a miss and scored on a put-back to make it 72-63 with 3:10 left.

Following two Middleton free throws to cut the JCSU lead to 72-65, the Golden Bulls turned it over.  Following the turnover, Richardson brought FSU to within five at 72-67 with a 15 foot jumper from the right side.  After JCSU was called for an offensive foul, FSU had an opportunity to cut further into the lead but committed their 30th turnover of the afternoon.

JCSU's Ashley Porter missed two free throws with 46 seconds remaining and this time, but FSU again turned the ball over.  FSU was forced to foul, and JCSU's Gholson missed both free throws giving FSU hope again.  An errant three point attempt from the corner was no good, and JCSU was able to rebound and was fouled with 6.9 seconds remaining, leading 72-67.  Phifer then calmly toed the line for JCSU and hit both free throws to make it 74-67.  Fayetteville State could not get a good look and their three point attempt was no good as the buzzer sounded.

The Golden Bulls were led by Anika Jones' 20 points.  Kaylah Gholson had 15 points while teammates Shanequa Phifer and Amena Brent scored 13 and 10 points, respectively.  JCSU scored 35 points off 33 FSU turnovers and had 17 second chance points.  The Golden Bulls also had a 24-14 advantage in bench points.

Fayetteville State got 18 points from Makayla Williams and 16 from Deja Middleton in the loss.  

JCSU improves to 17-6 overall, 7-5 in CIAA play while FSU falls to 8-13 and 4-8 in league contests.  JCSU will return home to Brayboy Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 11 with a 5:30 date with St. Augustine's.
