Box Score 2 JCSU Softball Drops Doubleheader to CokerCharlotte, N.C. (March 10, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith softball dropped a doubleheader to visiting Coker College on Tuesday afternoon at Biddleville Park.
Game one started as a pitcher's duel, as neither team was able to scratch across runs in the first four innings. Coker broke through with three two runs in the top half of the fifth inning. With two out, Coker got a single from Corrine Stiles. Stiles then stole second and scored after a JCSU error to put Coker ahead 1-0. Coker would score again, this time thanks to a Jill Lewis single that scored Katelyn Szupello.
JCSU got a single from
Melissa Vierra (Tracy, Ca.) in the bottom half of the fifth but failed to score in the frame. Coker added another run in the sixth to go ahead 3-0 and would add another three runs in the seventh to push ahead 6-0.
JCSU could not manage another hit the rest of the way, falling 6-0. Tabitha Allen was superb for the Cobras, as she pitched a complete –game, striking out six and allowed only one hit.
In game two, Coker plated two runs in the second and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Golden Bulls responded in their half of the third, pushing three across to knot the score at 3-3. In the inning,
Tia Mahoney (Hartwell, Ga.) was hit by a pitch and later stole second. Mahoney reached third after a sacrifice bunt from
Cabrisha Anderson (Atlanta, Ga.) and would score on a passed ball to cut the Coker lead to 3-1. JCSU's
Tia Greene (Huntersville, N.C.) singled through the left side and would score after
Jocelyn Hernandez (Bloomington, Ca.) launched a triple to right-center. Hernandez then scored on a single from Vierra to make it 3-3.
Coker would explode for six runs in the sixth to go up 9-3. The big blow to JCSU was a pair of two-run doubles, the first from Coker's Ashlee Allen and the second from Riley Morris. Coker added three more in the seventh on a three-run homer by Ashley Gallman that cleared the left center fence.
JCSU could get nothing going in the seventh, going down in order to provide the 12-3 final.
With the losses, JCSU falls to 2-6 overall while Coker improves to 12-9 on the year.
The Golden Bulls will return to action on Friday, March 20 at the CIAA Roundup in Raleigh, N.C. against Chowan and Bowie State.
